When I was working as an investigator of the Government they used to teach us that all insults are ultimately redirection.
If a miscreant calls a cop an asshole and the cop responds the issue becomes the response not the initial felony.
So it is with people who want to argue on the net. Often a point of view is espoused and rather that agree to disagree the troll will pull out an insult. That makes the insult the issue. It redirects from the argument and ends up with the troll evenyually feeling he has won because they have worn out the argument.
There is no substance just redirection.
The trouble is as humans we all have a need to feel understood. Generally we want people to understand our point of view. The cop who gave you the ticket doesnt appreciate being called an asshole but he normally cops it with a 'Oh yeah Sir heres the ticket, have a nice day' because the consequences of response are clear to him. He can write a guy a ticket and move on or he can mace him, beat him over the head and probably spend a few months defending himself and be out of a job (dont confuse this with when the miscreant throws the first punch..thats a whole another ballgame). So what happens is we get drawn in to the vortex of the troll and find ourselves descending to the level they are comfortable with. It is hard to avoid with all the best intention.
I think the lesson for us all is that we probably should not do that but sheesh its fun sometimes.
Oh dear. Henry that’s good instructions. Us trolls will never listen though. I didn’t use to be a troll. But it’s true, fight with a troll and become a troll. It’s almost impossible to stop especially when the chips are down. It’s so seductive. I’m getting an idea for a new avatar. Tippy the Troll. That’s easy to find.
