New Photos of Mexico House and Studio
These photos were taken last week and each represents a significant leap forward in their respective rooms. Things are even further along now--it's possible we could be in there by the third week of June!
The house has been painted, inside and out:
Here are three quarters of the paint crew: Edgar, Arturo and Juan:
An AMAZING rock wall to contain the dogs in front of the house:
The Studio floors are pretty wild: acid stained concrete. We are picking wall colors tomorrow, but they will be a gold, a burgundy/red and in the drum and bass booths, a good looking lively olive green. They are all colors in the floor somewhere.
The kitchen is coming together--note the Escher-style tiles Glenda designed for the backsplash behind the cooktop:
Glenda's lavender bedroom:
And inside my muy macho one I'll have wall to wall carpet in this room. Soy Gringo, so what?
The romantic yellow third bedroom, a more traditional Mexican look...
Complete with these hand made tiles in the bathroom:

The Master Bath:
And the partially frosted doors in the Master Bath:
The polished concrete (pulido) of the guest bath:
We threw a carnitas and beer party for 35 workers on Friday. We both read speeches in Spanish thanking everyone:
Our velador, Lalo--he's lived in Las Cabras for 65 years, as has his wife. All 10 of their children still live in the sweet little 300 person hill town.
Finally, the NEIGHBORS!!! The photos of the lizards don't really show how big and fat and colorful these guys are, but they are a big source of fun for me.

Amazing house Doug.
That's going to be a lively sounding studio with all those hard surfaces, any plans for echo-damping materials?

What a beautiful place, Doug and Glenda.
It looks like you've made you own little paradise in SMA.
An on top of that, nopalitos in the front yard!

THanks, all--and thanks to pete for bringing the older 'photo' threads up. I like keeping the different phases separate, but it is fun to see them all in one place.
"That's going to be a lively sounding studio with all those hard surfaces, any plans for echo-damping materials?"
yes, definitely. Dig this, though--the studio was my basic design, based on how I like to work, but made legit by a designer in L.A. While it is being built, of course it's all hard surfaces and lots of echo and it was making me nervous. But last week I brought a singer in and asked her to just walk around and sing. The reverb is gorgeous, no flutter, no ringing--sounds like Capital Records' gigantic echo chamber! No matter where I had her stand--in the live room or the smaller drum and bass booths--the sound was lovely. This designer obviously did his math right.
So now it is just a matter of taming it to the point where I can hear my mixes accurately but I can still tap into the benefits of natural reverb. There will be bass traps going up to about 9 feet in every corner (no right angles in this studio) and above my mixing area. We'll start with that and then see what more I need. Obviously, a carpet under the drums and a diffusor or two above them.

I am jealous, although such a beautiful space would be wasted on me, I'm still jealous. Sounds like you've created a beautiful place to work and live.

Glad that you're aware of your good fortune, Doug.
It's a lovely place, but I must admit I was thrown when I saw "Glenda's lavender bedroom". Do you not like lavender?

I love lavender...in Glenda's bedroom!
"You each get your own bedroom?? Cool!! I noticed you had a guest bedroom...hmmmm???"
Just like royalty. I snore, and we long ago got n the habit of separate bedrooms--I can stay up late and watch tv or read without bugging her. Seems like a civilized way to handle it.
"Where is Mexico is that? I mean general location....North, South?"
Right in the center of the country, tiny--abut 3 hours north of Mexico City. It's at 6500 feet, high desert, usually in the '70s but May is hot--high 80s to low 90s.
