What Anti-Virus Software Do You Recommend?

My Norton subscription has expired and they are very good. Is anything compatible?

And are there any free ones that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

Randy

Free, I like ad-aware. For $$ I prefer spyware doctor to Symantec.

I recently got a new laptop for calling, and the dancer/ IT maven who helped me out strongly recommended AVG products. He claims AVG doesn't slow things down as much as Norton. I'm using it, seems fine but don't really know enough to evaluate it. http://www.avg.com/

some stuff is free

I recently researched anti-virus software and decided on Kaspersky. So far, so good.

I used to use ad-aware but now prefer CCleaner. It's also free and cleans up one's registry.

Is CCleaner a virus scan system? I checked it out and it looks like it's more of a registry cleaner.

Randy, I heartily recommend either AVG or Avira freeware. I've used both for years with no problems whatsoever.

Here's a review on antivirus freeware.

actually the real threat these days is spyware and zoo-malware (Zlob for instance) and freeware such as AVG/AVIRA has huge deficits here(there's gotta be a reason being free?). Folks using youtube/myvideo should definitely stay away from freeware since picture files/streaming files contain zooware a lot!
Another problem is the updating of virus lists which is key to proper defense: Kaspersky is top here, Symantec' s old Norton AntiVirus sucked totally but since they've bought Sana Sec and came up with AntiBot(a totally new recognition technique) the 2009 Internet security incl. this AntiBot (make sure it does!) is a good choice since it includes repair tools as well

You are right. My bad. I still recommend it to clean one's registry. The freeware I use is Malwarebytes.

Lonely-at-the-top, what the hell is zooware? Googling gets me nowhere. There seems to be some kind of legitimate software called ZooWare. Could you elucidate?

That's either the name of an anti-virus software or a puzzling non sequitur.

See if this answers your question, Tom. Lonely is not talking about software.

Zoo Malware

Thanks, Ron and everyone else. Great answers. I was also wondering about Zooware and anti-hypnoticbotic software!

You're welcome, Randy.

Whatever you do, don't renew your Norton subscription. They're one of the worst jokes in the industry. Trust me.

sorry folks for my late response, didn't mean to be impolite but had a 3 day weekend and used it
Tom: I thought mentioning Zlob would explain zoo ware, anyway Ron stepped in for me, thanks.
I go with Ron not buying the Norton sub(updates' are a joke). I do not second freeware, just to heavy on the system(but that's me and my requirements) Whatever you decide on, safe bet on the internet: only in "guest" status, i.e. without admin properties while surfin' the www, that way malware cannot "molest" your registry
