John Mclaughlin Montreux box, CD 8 -9

Haven't had a chance to listen to any more of this 'til yesterday. I thought i'd give the 80s Mahavishnu Orchestra another chance 'cos their studio efforts sucked big time. I was hoping that live their talents could shine through, but, alas that is only true up to a point.
First up, i have a major problem with John's guitar synth. He's nowhere near as accomplished at utilising it's potential as Metheny is, so he just gets a generic synth/keyboard sound out of it which kind of defeats the purpose IMHO. Evans gets off a couple of good solos in the uptempo tracks, and McLaughlin can still pull a good one out of the bag (on Eastside Westside in particular). He's always been the king when it comes to writing ultra fast heads, with tricky time signatures, but if you're looking for that check out Joy on the Shakti discs.
