Jay Leno vs Conan
NBC wanted to make sure Conan didn't jump to another network.
Leno out, Conan in.
Apparently, NBC thinks Conan is the Captain Bitchen of the late night airwaves. He is the Katie Couric of late night TV: All show, no go.
Jay Leno, IMHO, got screwed by the network suits and Conan's ego.
How say you?

You do realize that NBC is giving Leno a 10pm talk show five nights a week, right? They're actually remaking the concept of primetime lineup so that he will continue to be on the network.
So, fear not. You'll still have your fill of super-bland, predictable, unfunny talk show and you'll be able to sleep earlier.

Jay Leno, IMHO, became seriously unfunny decades ago, though his stand-up routine on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was tolerable.
This lineup change on NBC has been in the making for years.
Also, what Sergio said.
So say I.

Except that they will be separated by the local newscast (or whatever else the local NBC station airs at 11PM Eastern-Pacific/10PM Central-Mountain).

Letterman has also lost a lot from his peak, IMO. He's a much better interviewer than Leno but his monologues are often boring as are his bits, IMO. He should have retired the Top 10 list a long time ago.
Leno has said that his 10PM show will cost 1/5 as much to produce as a show like CSI. That's good for NBC but if the ratings are poor, the 11PM newscasts will suffer and affiliates will threaten to dump Leno's show.
I'm not impressed with Conan so far.

I understand that.
It's just amazing to me the fuss over all this as if it's the shifting tides.
It's going right back to the same two guys who have shows for many years (essentially) back to back.
Neither hold much interest to me, and I've not liked Conan very much at all.
The new Leno format is dubbed to be some sort of variety show; my expectations are low, so maybe there will be a pleasant surprise once in a while. I'll track it in the beginning some...
I rarely watched either anyway, NEVER for a complete show.

They all suck and should have been replaced twenty years ago. Carson is the only one I respect, not because he was funny, but because he had the grace to die.

Late night talk shows are a drag. I have to be pretty desperate to settle on one of those channels at that time of night. YouTube will always be there in the rare event something exiting actually happens.

That didn't seem to be your point with post #1. If it was, why did you launch this poll and fail to mention Allen, Paar, or Carson?
Sure seemed to me that you were simply pro-Leno/anti-Conan from the get-go.

You assumed, yes.
The current issue is Leno vs. Conan, Ron.
Clint was referring to nostalgia in his post regarding Steve Allen, Jack Paar, or Johnny Carson.
I am completely puzzled as to why you can't understand that...but, oh well. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, eh?

Dumb "jokes"
Gordon, my wife and I saw that Letterman show last night and cringed. Someone did not give Dave the correct information and he and/or his writers were working under the (false) impression that Sarah Palin was traveling with her oldest daughter, Bristol (who has a child), not Willow.
Letterman did not say that the jokes were aimed at Bristol, not Willow as suggested in your link. In fact, he never mentioned the daughter's name, only her age.
My theory is that the Late Show staff did not do their homework and thought that Palin only had one daughter.
In any event, Letterman's comments were ignorant, tasteless, ill-advised and inflammatory, for starters.
For the record, I'm still not a Sarah Palin fan.

Dave's 'explanation' was pretty weak (though understandable); well short of what may have actually been needed, which was an apology.
We all know, and more importantly he knows what he's about and what kind of stuff he does night in & night out.
Had he fessed up and simply said he blew it this time..... we all move on.

To be absolutely clear (in case I wasn't earlier), I'm not excusing Letterman, but rather making some observations about how/why this kerfuffle may have occurred.

Exactly right. Why does anyone watch? We all know and he knows that the show is about promoting celebrities and their projects. Those celebrities allow him to hook his increasingly poor wit to the faddish zeitgeist of the day, and Dave's program allows celebrities to attach their aspirations to the institution of night time TV.
Who fucking cares? Oh, for an anti-fungal culture spray.

Well, to be "exactly right", Late Night with David Letterman is on CBS, not NBC. Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno are part of the NBC night time TV institution to which you refer.

I didn't watch it but after reading what you and Mike had to say as well as the article I linked to, I have three things to say.
1. Letterman's comments were in extremely poor taste.
2. He didn't own up to #1. He owes the Palins an apology.
3. He made Sarah Palin into a more sympathetic figure, not a good thing, either!

I agree with most of the above, Gordon.
Dave did say (if not explicitly) that his comments were in poor taste, but a clear unequivocal apology should have been extended.
I think that Palin's charm is short-term at best, even with dummies. She's not done with shooting herself in the foot ... trust me.
