Billy Harper

I'm starting a new generic thread because there aren't any (generic ones) for Billy Harper.

Anyway, the specific reason I'm posting is to note the presence of two old (oop?) Harper albums at the a la carte digital store Amie Street, currently each under $2:

Capra Black (1973)

Soran Bushi, B.H. (1977)

Powerhouse player, we saw him a few years back at a jazz joint in NYC with some of our JC buddies.

Don't let Baraka's presence dissuade you from checkin' out the relatively recent Blueprints of Jazz, Vol. 2. It's prime Harper. And his solo on "I Want to Talk About You" from the Charles Tolliver Big Band Emperor March: Live at the Blue Note should make a believer out of anyone.

I'm a believer, but the possibility that Baraka might be getting residuals would dissuade me.

I only have this one, but I like it a lot. In addition to his excellent playing, he has a fine singing voice as well.

Billy Harper

LIVE IN EUROPE features his fine composition, "Priestess," also available on Gil Evans album. In the Bay Area, his last appearance with Randy Weston was particularly fine. First time I heard him ('60s) was with Max Roach...

Harper with Sonny Fortune, Reggie Workman, Stanley Cowell, and Billy Hart.

With Francesca Tanksley, Eddie Henderson, Louie Spears, and a whole bunch of drummers.

That Randy Weston gig WAS nice. We must have been at different shows, David.

I first heard him in the 70's with Max Roach (Keystone Korner). It would be nice if "The Loadstar" was released on CD someday, too.

BTW, that's "In Europe" - not a live album.

Francesca Tanksley plays a lot with my favorite local drummer. I love to hear -- and watch -- her play.

Billy's seemingly releasing new digital stuff himself (well, under his distribution moniker), and it's appearing on emusic, including two I didn't have: The Awakening and Trying to Make Heaven My Home. Take advantage!

VERY interesting. Needless to say, some GREAT stuff.
Don't miss "Trying To Make Heaven My Home" - besides, it's only 3 tracks.

Personally, I find Baraka's three tracks the weak link on this CD. The voice is balanced way too prominently in the mix - the poems/recitations don't seem to connect with the music - and it sounds as if some of the best improvising is lost in the background. The other tracks are good, but the impact is lessened somewhat. Kevon Harrold sounds promising.

You might also check Billy Harper's website (which I think is hooked up to Jazz Corner). He has made these and a number of other earlier recordings available on CD on his website for serveral years now. I bought a number of discs directly in this manner. I imagine that more of the proceeds end up with the artist with this route.

Sadly, Billy is not doing it himself. Most of his CDs are available through his website, and more than $2 a piece, but Billy makes far more money, and needs to pay a hefty price for his own stuff. What else is new? BTW, we are revamping his website this summer.

IMO, one of the greatest tenors we have and so underplayed.

Who is? Do you mean to imply that the digital issues are not connected to him at all? There's no original-label linkage between the new offerings - it seems either he's connected, or they're bootlegs; I can't imagine another explanation.

Still curious, Lois. Seems to me if Billy or his management is not involved with this digital distribution, he has to be being ripped off, as these are old albums from disparate labels being lumped under his name.

Vince - I'll let Lois speak for herself, but I understood her comment to mean the following: Billy Harper does not own the copyrights to these older albums. So whoever does own the copyrights might be able to sell downloads through emusic without compensating Billy Harper at all. Apparently, as I also understood from Lois' comment, Billy Harper also has to pay copyright fees to the company in order to sell them on his website.

My question is predicated on the fact that these older albums come from disparate original labels/sources - I'd find it very odd if someone other than Billy had rights to them in a consolidated fashion to digitally distribute them under a single 'Billy Harper' moniker. Who is this single party?

Thanks Vince for bugging me about this issue and hopefully I can clarify. Indeed, Billy is offering some of his music digitally. None of the Steeplechase stuff or his latest of Blueprints of Jazz. I was on the phone with him (prompted by Vince's email) and in the next few days we will list on his site what is available directly through him digitally or if you want a hard copy what's available through JazzCares (which Billy sends out directly). On his site, we'll list the digital material that Billy is distributing directly and provide the Amazon link.
