Karl Malden
Passes at 96, this ends his chance at longest Hollywood marriage ever, nosed out by Art Linkletter and Norman Lloyd. Rest in peace Lt. Stone.
EDIT: 97, I robbed him of a year

everything i heard about him over the years also indicated that he was a great person as well. i know Michael Douglas will be strongly mourning his loss as will millions of others. he was definitely one-of-a-kind in more ways than one.

RIP, Mladen Sekulovich.
He often got his real last name into the script on his projects as a character's name. In "On the Waterfront," Fred Gwynne's character was named "Sekulovich."
In "Fear Strikes Out," in which he plays Piersall's father, the Red Sox scout was named Sekulovich. There was a Sgt. Sekulovich in "Streets of San Francisco." When he played Gen. Omar Bradley in "Patton" and loses his helmet, he asks a soldier named Sekulovich to pick up a discarded one.

This one floors me for the simple reason that I assumed he died in the 1980s sometime. I really thought he was dead. And it's not like Karl Malden is nobody to me. I am a big fan of American drama of the Williams and Miller era and he was a force in that stuff. I really thought he was dead. I was sure he was dead. Is Vivien Leigh dead? Good God.
Rest in peace, Mitch.

My clear recollection is that Malden died in the late 80's. Amazing!

I don't remember thinking that Karl Malden was dead, but I can't get over his age when he passed. Wow, what a full life!
He was always an actor I admired and enjoyed on large and small screens. I'm sure glad that the Screen Actors Guild honored him while he was still among us.
R.I.P, Mladen Sekulovich~

Heh heh, you said "Malden" "longest" and "nosed" all in the same sentence.
RIP to the guy who made Blanche say "It's not his kisses I mind, it's those other little familiarities."

Stats for Ron
Linkletter, born Gordon Kelly, and Lois Foerster Linkletter will reach 74 years on November 25. Norman and Peggy Lloyd cleared 73 last week. Malden was married to the former Mona Greenberg for 70 years.

Thanks for the stats, Gordon.
Patti and I are pikers by comparison (44years, 3months, 24days), but here's hoping we reach or exceed that number of years together. Patti's parents celebrated their 65th anniversary last Christmas day, so there are good genes on one side of the equation.

So Alaska had only been a state for six years when Ron and Patti tied the knot. Ron, how long have you and Patti lived in the state?

I knew he was still alive - in fact, I saw the beginning of The Cincinnati Kid on TCM last week and wondered how much longer he'd be among us.
His fine performances are of course numerous, but usually when I think of him or hear him mentioned the first scene that comes into mind is the conclusion of Nevada Smith: Steve McQueen's spent the whole film going after the three bad guys who killed his parents. Malden's the baddest of the trio (the others are Martin Landau and Arthur Kennedy), so naturally he's the last one McQueen finds and confronts. At the fade-out (I'll try not to spoil the end with too many details) Malden launches into one of most unforgettable screaming fits in cinematic history: "You're yella! You haven't got the guts! You're yella... YOU'RE YELL-AAA!"
Happy Trails, Karl.

And all this time I thought he was named for a town in Massachusetts.

I arrived (with my parents) in Alaska in September, 1956, and Patti arrived (with her parents and siblings) in September, 1960.

Further proof that deaths come in threes.
I once stayed at a motel in Malden, MA. I bought tickets for Salif Keita in Cambridge and couldn't get a hotel room in Boston or Cambridge--turns out it was the regatta that weekend. I picked Malden because it was on the subway line.

I loved that show.
My uncle met him once in a coffee shop where they were both having breakfast. He said he really was just a regular guy.

Does anybody else think he got all the best lines in "On the Waterfront"?

No, silly guy, now he's with Budd Schulberg. Or maybe Budd, being the more recent arrival in the hereafter, is with him.
