The Swimmers' Thread
Any swimmers out there?
If there are, what kind of workouts do you like?
I am just getting back to the pool, and I am trying to refine my technique.
Just now working on alternative side breathing (was always a right side breather).
Also, I am working on my back stroke and breast stroke, thinking it would be a good idea to mix up the strokes for a better workout.
I am having to row and swim these days because of osteoarthritis in my knees. But I am really starting to love swimming again.

sorry, Uli, that has nothing to do with swimmers.
I love to swim, and just wish my local pool (which is right around the corner) did not have such restrictive hours that I can't use it!

I keep losing count when I do laps, so I ordered this "lap counter," which is basically a plastic ring thingy that you put on your finger and you push after every lap. I've been tracking its progress toward me.
For some reason, it "arrived" in Syracuse three times. I suppose they put it on a different truck, and drove it around town a few times, so as not to arrive at my house too soon.
I think I will have it Monday, in time for my evening swim.

And, I suspect, they all swim wearing swimsuits....maybe even a bikini or two, perhaps? Yes?
Uli was making a joke, HP.
sheesh

It is a great workout, I am told.
Just a thought: Have you thought of joining a group to meet with to keep you going to the pool?
I hope it all goes well and for your knees to recover....my knees are shot, too. I fully appreciate and understand your efforts.
Good luck, Rollie!

Goody... yes, I have thought of joining a group, and I plan on doing that as soon as my technique gets up to speed.
Right now, I do the crawl, while breathing just on the right side. I want to learn how to do alternate breathing, and also learn how to do the flip turn before I start swimming with a group.
Most of the "masters" swim groups I know about are serious swimmers, who swim for time. Right now, I am a very mediocre swimmer and I need to develop more confidence and ability before I embarrass myself with real swimmers.

Mostly, I do an Australian crawl and/or backstroke when I swim.
Left-overs from my body surfing days...but a great exercise nonetheless.
Makes sense regarding your concerns about ability and not feeling confident. Maybe there is a group at the same swimming level as you? Your local Parks and Recreation folks may be of some assistance here. Not that it matters, but I just make the turn any way I can. It isn't pretty, but it works

Sure.
They have groups for all levels at the public pools in my Little-Land-O-Enchantment.
You have never heard of such a thing?

Oh, damn well I've heard of those and I fear them most and above almost everything! My wife's a "groupie", she does it all in groups: walking, (Nordic Walking they call it, it's with ridiculous sticks and looks like they've lost their skis) swimming, they even watch Grey's Anatomy in a girl group.
Everytime I make fun of that she replies: "..and you play soccer with the boys and drink beer". Yeah, right it's called team sport, sweetheart.
I am a born solo sailor and I ride my bike with no one watching nor commenting. Sue me!
