Couldn't this fit in Other Music, too?
However, as I've already said, it's possible that Jackson was the most globally popular entertainer ever, depending on how that is measured.
There may be other non-American entertainers that had more fans, I don't know. Who's big in China?

Michael Jackson didn't just change the world with his music, he altered the fabric of the galaxy.
There has never been a more positive contribution by a carbon-based lifeform who could dance.

ET seems to have inherited Michael's old nose.
I'm not gettin' all negative; just an observation.

FIVE MILLION people, so far, have seen the video on-line of the memorial.
Just over a million have watched the President's inaugruation.
And the five million is just the day of the Jackson memorial.
That's amazing, IMO.

Well, aside from his nose being too wide, his skin too dark and his hair too kinky, I suppose so.

What religion was Michael Jackson? I mean at the end. I know he flirted with the JWs. But a guy like him, y'know, remarkably talented musician, world-historical figure, not a child molester, he must have had keen insights into metaphysics that we can mock when we take a break from his skin color and sexuality.

I think the moonwalk is up there with the sonata. Especially since the sonata was a long time ago and it was easy to come up with new stuff then. But by the time of the moonwalk, people had been dancing for a looooong time, and there wasn't anything really new for ever so long. And then boom! this guy looks like he's moving forward when he's moving backwards! Way cool and under-valued, IMHO.
Also, a lot of sonatas are boring. Most of them, really. But the only moonwalkers who are boring are shitty moonwalkers.

I'm bemused that the initial Jackson thread was closed for hateful anti-Jackson comments.
The admittedly over-the-top newspaper column I posted? I made it clear I did not endorse its views.
In fact, I don't care about Jackson and his passing one way or another. It's a parallel universe to mine.
But I AM interested in the the whole fascinating circus surrounding his passing - what someone has referred to as "America's Princess Di moment".
Sad that open, freewheeling debate is curtailed because some/many of us care to don't share the adoration or dare to question the party line regarding his greatness or not.
Sad that forum examination of what is clearly a significant cultural event is ended at least partly on the basis of what other people - newspaper columnists - think, fueled apparently by a lofty judgment of the entertainer concerned.
Yeah, yeah - I know it's Lois' forum and all that ... just saying ...

Read something recently that said he was born and raised JW, may have converted to Christianity or Catholicism, and probably at least flirted with Islam (Jermaine is a Muslim, apparently). His "wife" or whatever Debbie Rowe, meanwhile, is Jewish, so whichever one(s) she birthed are technically Jewish.

I thought it was interesting that at the memorial service on CNN, all of the slideshow shots that were being constantly displayed at the Staples center were before MJ really went over the edge plastic surgery-wise. The latest shots I saw were around the 'Beat It' era. If you're going to remember the guy, shouldn't you remember him in total?

Kenny, I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt that Lois closed the thread because of the article you posted.
Nor do I think she closed it because of a "freewheeling debate" over Jackson.
Having said that, I don't think that the Michael Jackson thread should ever have appeared in Speak Out. Having the thread in another forum may have changed precious little, but I always felt it belonged in Other Music, for what it's worth.
Rather than speculate, perhaps those who are pissed or confused about Lois' actions should send her a PM and ask why she closed the thread. Or, send her an e-mail: Lois@jazzcorner.com

Nor do I think that, Ron. Not solely anyway.
Here's what Lois said:
Quote:

I moved this thread to SpeakOut because I believe Michael Jackson is so important to music and entertainent. I respect that many of you don't agree with me, but to be so vile and so venomous, and quite frankly slanderous, I can no longer see the point of keeping this thread open.
|
Vile, venomous, slanderous? Maybe ... but there remains the suspicion, here and elsewhere, that any broader assessment and criticism is automatically being so labelled. Let's be done with it: Saint Michael.

The "vile" and "venemous" stuff is really over the top, frankly. Incredible that Lois or anybody can feel that commenting on his behavior—which ranges from plain weird to over-the-top deviance—amounts to some sort of slander. But in America, celebrities really do get a free pass, and Jackson is ample proof.
I do think he was great in many ways, though not a genius, and far from the greatest rock/pop musician of all time. I also think his music stands apart from his life; people will listen to it for many years to come, as they should. But it's preposterous to think that in looking back on his life all his sordid actions should be blithely brushed under the rug. Yet that's what a certain clique on this forum would have us do.
