Who's more gorgeous - Naomi Watts or Maggie Gyllenhall?
Battling it out for the top two places in 'Most attractive women in the world'.
With a dark horse in the mix - Megyn Price...

Hmmm... Those '' were uncalled for David!
Still, who can forget that great Seinfeld episode with Marisa Tomei?
Still, the bottom line here is that 'gorgeous' in this context does not mean stereotypical perfect features, the kind of symmetry one finds in a Greek statue. It's more a case of personality, charisma, distinction, character, that je ne sais quoi which others lack.
I reiterate, Maggie or Naomi?, (with Megyn not to be forgotten.)

I don't think Maggie is gorgeous. Just sexy as hell.
Naomi wins. Incredibly hot in Mulholland Drive. Some of the hottest lesbian love ever filmed.

Nami was radiant in that scene in King Kong when she's doing pratfalls on the cliff edge where she's trying to save her own life.

Maggie attracts me quite a bit (and iirc I've liked every role in which I've seen either of them), but Naomi is in another class of looks. So, Naomi in any way your question could be interpreted...

I don't think Maggie is particularly good looking. I"ll take Marisa Tomei over her by a wide margin. I'll vote for Naomi over Maggie but Laura Harring over Naomi.

Ahhah! But you see, you're missing the point! It's not about being conventionally/classically goodlooking, it's about being distinctively attractive, unique, one of a kind.
Naomi is undoubtedly the more 'conventionally' better looking (on a merely physical plane) but Maggie has far and away (at least until she started getting more commercial roles and has started doing that tragic 'playing to audience expectation of what a leading lady should look like' that only Christina Ricci seems to have fully escaped (although i could well be wrong)) the more beautiful face - so much more character, warmth, expressiveness.
I just think it's tragic that beauty has been not just commodified, but standardized. I mean apart from even classical musicians having to be good looking, i mean that by and large only a particular type of good looks is deemed acceptable.

Interesting that Maggie's mother's name is Naomi.
Well, maybe not all that interesting, come to think of it ... again.

I think you might be confusing lack of agreement with disagreement, and the fact that there is any point at all here. Additionally, if you think it's tragic that "beauty" is at least somewhat standardized, then you should step back a bit and look at the big picture. One, that beauty (attractiveness) is standardized in significant ways throughout the animal kingdom (symmetry being one prominent attractive characteristic), and two, that people thought beautiful look similar in marked ways (I deliberately understate that) compared to a variety of things found "ugly" (e.g. a maggot or a pile of feces or a crushed body or the head of an arthropod, etc).

Needless sophistry sirrahh! I require no anthropology lessons. I'm not talking about a general 'no crooked teeth, nostrils and eyes both one on each side (as opposed to far less savoury alternative), no wens, moles or facial hair'.
I'm describing the way a particular standard of beauty is being applied - one where there's little room for distinctiveness and diversity. Instead, all the cheekbones must be high, lips full and pouty, nose slightly aquiline etc.
I suppose i'm trying to make a point along the lines of the standardization/commercialization of nost things e.g. jazz music (re the infamous Wynton Marsalis/museum piece debate) - i.e. the idea that no rough edges or raw features make the grade, everything has to be smooth and predictable.
I think it's extremely interesting that so far everyone's making the 'obvious' choice - Naomi. The blonde, pretty girl, with an expressive face, and lovely big eyes.
That's ooooold - the Romans were digging that look waaaaay back in the day, using Gaulish/Celtic/Germanic slaves for their hair for wigs.
Major point being - 'be outside the box aesthetically', 'don't go for the obvious' - these and others are my mottoes.

I'll take the "obvious" when it's in the form of Naomi Watts—though there's really nothing "obvious" about her.

Naomi Watts by a landslide.
I've been in love with her ever since I saw her in "Mulholland Drive." I once even saw her in person. You can read about it in "A Perfect Night on Broadway" -- a thread I started a long time ago.

Naomi Watts was especially alluring in " Eastern Promises", although I must confess that I hardly noticed her until a good third of the way, transfixed as I was with the sheer beauty of Viggo Mortensen.
However, in the re-make of "Funny Games" they certainly had her in lingerie more than was necessary to illustrate the point of the scene. Yes. She is quite beautiful.

Viggo's a good actor. I liked "Eastern Promises" a lot.

Who cares? Neither one of them could sing an altered dominant scale. I hate these stupid man threads about "hot" women. I'm a fat ugly bitch, but I'm just as good as these b*****s the mainstream XYs drool over. Who's hotter: Cookie Coogan or Maggie whoever? Answer, we're BOTH f'in' hotter than anyone who cares "who's hotter".
I hate these threads. Am normally tolerant and ignore but I'm feeling fat 'n' feisty today.

Yeah, I just happened to watch that Mulholland Drive clip recently . Laura Harring is stunning. Not sure why we don't see more of her. She seems to me like a throwback to the sex symbols of decades ago. Even though she doesn't look like Rita Hayworth, she still reminds me of her.

Apologies cookie! I didn't mean to be a stinking man pig. If you like i'll start up a thread asking 'who was more gorgeous in their mid 30's peak - Harrison Ford, or Robert Redford?'
BTW the intention of the thread was to highlight more unconventional beauty, away from the supermodel stereotype. I guess Naomi is just too attractive for that to work.

I take your point, Cookie.
Beauty in itself is there, or it's not. More important is what else they've got.
Sometimes the answer is crickets, which is truly sad.
Whenever these threads pop up I'm reminded that my mother used to dismiss such talk by saying, "It's just the box they came in, which will be buried in another box eventually, like all of us."
But, appreciating beauty is one of the things that makes us human.
We just have to remember that there are few things more transitory than beauty.

Patricia: I want to recommend Muriel Berbery's Elegance of The Hedgehog to you. This is one of its themes, and I think the main characters -- a secretly intelligent and cultured concierge and a precocious and suicidal teenage girl -- will appeal to you.

I think the appropriate rebuttal would be the male equivalent i suggested earlier.
I do think it's a bit much though that women tend to get all sorrowful, indignant, angry and scornful when something like this comes up.
It's not as though women don't have the same appreciation of good looking men.
We have to remember that this is separate from somehow judging a person's worth - it's not a matter of Keats here y'know.
