School Days: 1. Another Double (Vandermark/ASCAP) [for Håvard Wiik] (8:26)

The first trio recording of the Håvard Wiik Trio seems to be even more secret than I expected. It was released on September 15 and got a few very favorable reviews in local papers and was presented on the radio (and the two tracks that I heard did live up to my expectations.

Still, there's nothing about the trio recording on jazzlandrec.com - and it's not yet available from any of the sites that I've checked.

I did, however, find that he will be performing in the neighborhood in few days - with Ken Vandermark and Ingebrikt Håker Flaten. They seem to have a recording out, as well.

Vandermark and School Days latest recording starts with four dedications: The first Vandermark compositition is dedicated to Håvard Wiik. The next three is dedicated to Larry Young, Bobby Hutcherson, and Miles Davis.

Håvard Wiik is primarily known internationally through his work with Atomic ( "Feet Music" and "Boom Boom")

On the piano trio recording his with bass player Mats Eilertsen (Ian Ballamy's "Food") and Per Oddvar Johansen (couple of ECM recordings). He has long been established as the leading pianist here, but has not been willing to do a piano trio until he has something new to add to the catalogue.

Jazzland finally has a 30 minute Real Audio sample of Håvard Wiik Trio and it also includes Atomic's latest recording.

Free Fall's "Furnace" got a glowing review here yesterday. But it's not out in Norway, only in the USA. I don't recall the label right now. "Free Fall" refers to the Jimmy Giuffree/Paul Bley/Swallow recording. Ken Vandermark, Håvard Wiik, and Ingebrikt Håker Flaten.
