Eddie Gladden - R.I.P.

I looked through the boards, and found nothing about Eddie's passing a few weeks ago. George Cables was over today and told me the sad news. Apparently, he died at home in Newark after a massive heart attack. Eddie was a great, great timekeeper and made such beautiful music with Dexter.

Wow ..thats more real sad news ..

Eddie was a real straight ahead dependable
guy throughout his long career, although
maybe not as well known by the jazz public
as he should have been ..

RIP, Eddie

A great drummer. The one time I saw him with Dexter in 1981 and it was a revelation to me. Up to that time I mostly listened to Avant stuff and thought hard-bop, etc. wasn't cool. Eddie's drumming that night convinced me that jazz was not separated into disticked, easy to classify categories. His playing was as "free" as the Blackwells, Steve McCalls and all the others I was listening to at the time.

I just gave a listen again to a fine Kirk Lightsley CD, "Everything Has Changed" that featured Gladden. He was great.

that is really sad news. I also enjoyed hearing him live and on record with Dexter.

Thanks for passing that news along, Lois.
