This is the only blurb I found on his website. There doesn't seem to be any details.
Welcome to the Official Website of Rashied Ali
Our thoughts are with Rashied's family today.
We're going to miss him a lot. He was a unique and beautiful cat, with a big heart and a generous spirit. Rashied lives on through his family, friends and his music.

Indeed. One of Trane's greatest records, and probably the high point in Ali's career.

His duo performance with Sonny Fortune at the Flynnspace in Burlington a few years ago was absolutely brilliant. RIP, Mr. Ali.

Sad. Interstellar Space was the first Coltrane record I ever bought and remains pretty much my favorite.
Thanks, Mr. Ali.

Very sad news!
(I took these photos in October 19, 2007 when he played a great concert with By Any Means. The complete concert was later issued on Ayler Records with the title "Live at Crescendo")
RIP

R.I.P.
Another Master and Elder has moved on... Playin' with Trane in interstellar space...
My sincere condolences to his family, friends and many colleagues.
He was still playing at the very highest level as the recent trio CD with Hal Galper and Reggie Workman abundantly demonstrates.
And thanks for those beautiful photos, lazarus.

bodhi swaha!
Spent so much time with Ali, Interstellar Space among them.
Most definitely recommend his duo with Leroy Jenkins, Swift Are The Winds Of Life, and the quintet date on Ali's own label, with the unsung Earl Cross on trumpet.
Amazing musician, essential to the direction Coltrane took his music at the end of his life.
Nice photos, Laz.

Thanks for the pics, Laz.
I had met Rashied Ali in Paris just a couple of days prior the Ayler recording in Norköpping and the trio had treated us with a great night of music. Such a nice person too. Sad sad news indeed.
RIP

RIP Rasheid Ali
From the WBGO Blog:
Quote:
Sad news to report. Rashied Ali has died. Information is spare, but it has been confirmed on his website.
I can remember first hearing Rashied like many jazz lovers – by consuming vast amounts of the recorded legacy of John Coltrane. I followed Trane to the end, including every note that followed the dissolution of the famous quartet with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. Rashied Ali joined the group, and Elvin Jones was quick to depart. That made Rashied the go-to guy for Trane, and they really created some amazing music together. I wore out the Coltrane/Ali duet recording, Interstellar Space when I was in college. I simply could not fathom how two people created so much sound.
Fast forward to June 24, 2004. I was the producer for a live broadcast from Sounds of the City, an outdoor concert series presented by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The first of three acts we recorded that day was a duet with saxophonist Sonny Fortune and drummer Rashied Ali. Meeting them both for the first time was one thing, but it’s the concert that I’ll never forget. It’s one song – Coltrane’s “Impressions,” and it lasts for 55 minutes. We broadcast it live on WBGO. Click the button above to hear it. It was 5pm, right at the beginning of our drivetime. I think that if I had a car that day, I would have driven around the city until the song was over, because both of these gentlemen were so heavily invested in the music. That’s something I hope anyone can appreciate – a life dedicated to music. I’ll miss you, Rashied.

Listening to Interstellar Space the first time was one of those rare jaw dropping ecstatic listening experiences, and made me a big fan of his drumming ever since. He connected with Coltrane in a way I don't think anyone else did.

This is a grave loss for music. I too hold Interstellar Space in awe and reverance as one of the very great performances in recorded jazz. Rashied Ali had sublime musicianship and a questing, but generous spirit.

i heard from a person i consider a reliable source that Rashied was at Bellevue and they said he was ok and he went into the bathroom and died. almost unbelievable if true!
edit: apparently he was about to be released, with his wife and brother waiting to take him home! this is just horrible and, of course, very sad.

I got an e-mail from Famoudou Don Moye earlier, forwarded from Ronnie Burrage:
Dear Friends,
Please pass on the information that my good friend the great Rashid Ali passed yesterday. He suffered a mild heart attack last Thursday, was
scheduled for release yesterday. He got dressed as his wife and brother waited for him, said he had to use the restroom before leaving went in the bathroom and never came out.
All the Best,
Ronnie Burrage
