JAZZ FESTIVAL FOR NEW HAVEN SCHEDULED AS SINGLE DAY EVENT
New Haven, CT- August 5. It may be only for a single day but for a full day soon the New Haven Jazz festival will be back. And what a full day it will be when Jazz Haven, with the support from the New Haven Department of Cultural Affairs, produces the 2009 New Haven Jazz Festival presented by Casey Family Services. On August 22nd 2009 the New Haven Green will be jazzed up with the “Sounds, Colors and Cultures of Jazz.”
This single day event is packed from start to finish with performers that span all ages. The festival will open at 3pm with first graders from St. Thomas’ School and the night will end with a performance by a recipient of the 2008 National Endowment for the Arts- Jazz Master, 88-year-old Candido Camero. Other performers include Hamiet Bluiett, Shawnn Montiero, Craig Hartley, and Bobby Sanabria performing with Candido. Another highlight is the “Bluiett’s Improvised Youth Jazz Orchestra”. Comprised of youth from the Neighborhood Music School and other area schools, Hamiet Bluiett has graciously offered his time and expertise to organize and conduct a performance of this innovative orchestra.
In the tradition of more than 25 years of the New Haven Jazz Festival, audiences are encouraged to make a day and night of the event by bringing their chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to the New Haven Green. Food vendors will be on site or audience members may want to venture off site to enjoy one of New Haven’s numerous fine cafes or restaurants. This event will begin at 3pm and run till the last note is played. Continuing in the theme “Sounds Colors and Cultures of Jazz”, the stage backdrop is being created by satirist artist Tony “Baloney” Juliano, who is known for his comic-like paintings.
The Presenting Sponsor for the 2009 Festival is again Casey Family Services, without whose generous support this festival would not happen. Other sponsors include The M Fund, Yale University, New Alliance Bank Foundation, Community Foundation as well as individuals from the community.
The Director of New Haven’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Barbara Lamb stated that “The City is glad to support the festival again this year and is excited about the continuation of another summer day of hot sounds on the New Haven Green.” “I’m especially pleased that the sponsors were willing to continue their support in spite of in these economic times.”
Jazz Haven Co-founder Doug Morrill said “It’s a miracle that we are able to have the festival again this year, but thanks to our sponsors and supporters it is possible to keep this long tradition running.”
