Not to worry

Speakeasy is backed up on 2 servers every night as is the rest of JC. What happened at other bulletin boards would not take 2 weeks if something was to go wrong here. We are replicated on several servers.....

Thank you all for your concern and caring
Lois.

That's a relief. If all the boards go out, I will have to go back to doing things like housework and returning phone calls.

Thank you, Lois! That sure is a relief.

You may not read this or may not reply, but I'm curious about whether the firewalls or whatever security measures are involved would be likely to protect JC's servers from being hacked in the first place. I assume that repairing the board and the rest of the site after a hack would involve tremendous effort, expense, and headaches, even though it could be done. (Well, maybe not--if the board and site are replicated on several servers, I guess all of them wouldn't be hacked.)

Moné, are you reading this thread? Any comments?

The definition of hacker is someone who can get through.

Pete, if that refers to my post, I don't get it. What I'm asking is whether anyone could get through, insofar as that's knowable.

The answer is, insofar as it's knowable, someone could potentially get into anything.

We have belt and suspenders firewalls, filters and blockers and I still don't sleep well.

1) It's not knowable for sure. There is no such thing as 100% security, which is part of why disaster recovery measures are still necessary.

2) Noone should be giving you any guarantees, Rita, much less saying anything about what security measures this or any other website has in place on a public forum. A large part of a successful intrusion is successful information gathering. Saying, "we're secure and can't be hacked" is basically saying, "please hack us."

I was timed out for about an hour. I thought that maybe JC had been hit.

But it seems to be ok now.

I also couldn't get on JC for about an hour this afternoon.

This also happened on Sunday.

It does seem to be fine now.

Usually means a server is down, or is experiencing an addressablilty problem. Happens all the times with all sites. I think the bbs is on a different server, or at least address (technically a different URL that the main button switches to), so other parts of Jazz Corner can be up while the board is down.

Obviously, I missed something. Oh, well.

I've had some issues with JC recently, but it's mostly connected with signing on and recognition of me as a "Member".
