Matthew Shipp soloconcert at Loft, Cologne

Matthew Shipp soloconcert
It was a short concert 2 hours long, but the pieces were long,
first took 40 minutes, then he paused, the second about 35 minutes
followed by a short addon respecting the applause of the
nearly 50 persons ( at Loft thats about half of the possible package ) from the audience.
Now he has one more fan, because that's music as I like it.
For me this is futureoriented playing, going forward not looking back,
allthough I always can feel the black roots where it comes from.
And then this well balanced high energy playing including poetic moments,
citating moments, strong moments of dark tones. All he does can go
directly into my heart. I do not need to think over it. If I would give him
a hammer, I'm sure I would like what he would make of it ( let's say hammering the tones ).
And he has a flexability I like. And he has the ability to show one brick
then another and suddenly there is a wall and then there is a church.
Or let me say it in other words, he shows this star and that galaxy, the audience
thinks the sky and suddenly there is a univers of music.
Whow what a wonderfull concert, and afterwards I sat beside him on
an old 'sofa' and could talk a few thoughts of myself to him, he recomended
his hat hut recs to me. Hey, that was an highlight of a concert-evening tonight ( too short, like my note ).

Nice review, hermann; makes me wish I'd have been there. I gotta hear Shipp live one of these days; I've "seen" him at Laguardia before but that sure doesn't count.

Great review Hermann! I'm glad to hear he played so wonderfully. I'd love to see him too. . .I swear I read a few years ago that he and Wm. Parker were playing dates every now and then in the Midwest at grade schools and high schools (as I recall, the reception was unexpectedly ecstatic).
