I was sent the picture and the article by Dave Stryker, who was a guest on my show a couple of Sundays ago. Thanks Dave!

It doesn't surprise me at all, the numbers and such, just a joyous celebration of gathered talent! Wonderful idea whoever came up with putting a 21st century "Great Day..." photo together.

I don't know if they mentioned no in the picture Billy Drummond, Ray Drummond, Paul Meyers, Andrea Brachfeld all JC clients living in NJ.

Buster I believe lives in Harlem
James Williams lived in Bklyn but certainly teaches at Paterson

I was just looking at a copy of one that was done in Los Angeles years ago. It was kind of sad as so many of the guys are gone now. On a lighter note (pardon the pun!), I can see myself at the top of the photo (about as big as a pin) as I was standing on a second level overlooking the shoot and never imagined that I'd be in the shot! Lovely memento!

...and along strolls Reynolds with his much missed [by some, not I] tremendous lack of respect.
Here's a fantastic event full of greatly gifted, talented and dedicated musicians, recorded for today and for history, but it doesn't somehow measure up because it doesn't contain those who are worthy according to the laws of *Planet Stevie*

get over yourself...........................

40 who couldn't make it to the photo shoot

Many of the biggest names in jazz make their home -- or regularly perform -- in New Jersey. Here are some N.J. jazz notables who do not appear in the Great Day in Jersey photo:

...

Oliver Lake -- Lake, a longtime resident of Montclair, is a formidable alto saxophonist and composer of the jazz avant-garde. A founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet, he leads various ensembles, including a quartet and big band. His CDs include "Movement, Turns & Switches" and "Cloth" (both Passin' Thru), "Kinda' Up" (Justin Time) and "Dedicated to Dolphy" (Black Saint).

...

Reggie Workman -- This bass dynamo, active in post-bop and avant-garde circles, lives in Montclair. He has performed and/or recorded with many giants, among them Art Blakey ("Free For All," "Caravan" and "Ugetsu'), John Coltrane ("Ole Coltrane," "Impressions" and "Live at the Village Vanguard'), Freddie Hubbard ("Here to Stay," "The Body and the Soul'), Lee Morgan ("Search for the New Land") and Wayne Shorter ("Night Dreamer" and "Adam's Apple'). He is a co-leader of Trio 3, with Oliver Lake and Andrew Cyrille. Workman's albums include "Summit Conference," "Cerebral Caverns" (Postcards) and "Altered Spaces" (Leo).

...

They also mention:

David Ware -- A powerhouse tenor saxophonist of the jazz avant-garde, Ware is a native of Plainfield who lives in Scotch Plains. Ware has performed and recorded with Cecil Taylor ("Dark Unto Themselves") and Andrew Cyrille ("Special People") and leads a quartet with pianist Mathew Shipp. His recordings include "Surrendered" (Columbia), "Oblations and Blessings" (Silkheart), "Freedom Suite" (AUM) and "Threads" (Thirsty Ear). ...

Andrew Hill -- Pianist and composer Hill, who lives in Jersey City, is an artist who can meld the past modes of jazz with its current streams. He has played and/or recorded with Roland Kirk (before he was known as Rahsaan Roland Kirk), Joe Henderson, Hank Mobley, Sam Rivers and Greg Osby, but his main influence has been as a leader. His numerous albums include "Point of Departure" (Blue Note), "Invitation" (SteepleChase), "Dusk" and "A Beautiful Day" (both Palmetto). ..

Ted Curson -- Long-time Montclair resident Curson is a bold trumpeter who has performed and/or recorded with Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor and the Spirit of Life Ensemble. He is a regular in Jersey jazz rooms and leads a monthly jam session at Trumpets in Montclair. His albums include "Tears For Dolphy" (Black Lion), "Traveling On" (Evidence) and "Sugar 'N Spice" (Level Green).

Among the other artists who didn't make the photo shoot are Kenny Barron, Kenny Garrett, Keith Jarrett, James Moody, Wayne Shorter & Steve Turre.

I assume they were all otherwise engaged at the time of the shooting.

It's very dangerous to base a rant on ignorance.

Andrew Cyrille is in the picture, I think. According to the text to it he is the dude in the whithe suite and the dark hat in the second rowe from the front. Have seen him many times but the picture is not such that I could positively identify him. would probably need a bigger copy.

Indeed, Cyrille is on the list that Lois posted. I guess concern for the facts is too mainstream for Reynolds.

Actually, Abbey is in the second Rowe. But only in the negative of the jazz photo.

I like the article. Especially the transcription of the flute lesson at the end.

Not that it really matters that much but unless he's recently relocated, Giacomo Gates lives in Bridgeport, Connecticut. As a matter of fact, I saw him at the local Home Depot not too long ago......................

All the artists portrayed don't LIVE in New Jersey, Jimmy. For instance, I remember reading that Darryl Sherman "lives in Manhattan but WORKS in New Jersey clubs..."

Good question. He certainly an outstanding (Jazz) musician, and he surely lives in New Jersey!!!

I know he and Billy were in Europe touring with Dave Holland when the photo was taken, but there was all that other stuff....

Great to see this!

I looked for a hat, and found Richie Cole right away!

I didn't know that Billy VerPlanck is still with us. I have some Savoy work of his from the '50s, and I love it. Any recommendations?

I think he said on his "Ask" thread a few months ago that he moved to New York City.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful image, Lois. Anyone who doesn't understand and appreciate the significance of this photo simply doesn't "get it", and likely never will.
