Tavernier's "Round Midnight"

Watching a Herbie Hancock Bravo Profile early this morning, I heard Tavernier say (discussing his choice of Hancock to coordinate the music in the film) "my first choice was Carla Bley."
He goes on to praise Herbie, but I didn't know this...

As much as I respect Carla Bley, I'm not quite sure what she could have done for that film...Herbie seems like a natural choice.

I watched the film again a few months back, after not having seen it for years. It still holds up, in my opinion, as one of the best jazz films ever.

Bye-ya.

Me, too. It's in my personal video stash.

I think it's the most successful non-documentary jazz film. Anybody who hasn't read it already should check out Francis Paudras' Dance of the Infidels, his memoir of Bud. It echoes many of the details in the film, and is really moving.

One of my all-time favorite movie lines occurs very early on in the film (perhaps inaccurately recalled, but I'm sure this is the gist):

"You know who's going to be there when you get off the plane in Paris? You."
