God Bless Houston Person

The "Soul Jazz" thread launched by Dr. Dave led me to think of Houston Person, who deserves a thread of his own. One of the pillars of the greasy, fonky, walk-the-bar style for decades, who was much sampled in "acid jazz," Person also has a mellower side to him which has come to the fore in recent years. He's been recording a series of albums for the Savant label, in quartet or quintet (w/ guitar) format, that are quiet monuments to his phenomenally good taste, his gorgeous sound - warm, full, buttery, sensual, with a subtle bluesy keening or rasp whenever it's called for, which is often - and his mastery of relaxed, swinging phrasing. Melodic and accessible, it might seem generic until you pay a little attention and hear just how beautiful and authoritative it is. And just check out the playlist - it makes you realize how almost inexhaustible the pool of standards really is...

And that's not including all the Etta Jones albums he appeared on, for they were a pair for a long, long time. Here's hoping he continues in his present period of documented productivity.

P.S. The albums on Savant are available on emusic, as are a bunch of Etta Jones albums on High Note.

Yeah. Fashions in jazz come and go, but Houston Person is always there. I particularly enjoy his outing with the late Teddy Edwards, "Horn To Horn" (the one with Joel Dorn's surreal liner notes about his divorce). The "tribute" format may be corny, but the playing is muy simpatico.
