It's a group of nine musicians. I wouldn't say it's that common.

It's spelled nonet, and you can find it in the dictionary. I hope you'll stick around at Jazz Corner after you've answered your trivia question.

Are you sure that you didn't mean "RONETTES"?

Following the same logic:

If an Octet = 8

and a Nonet =9

and a dectet = 10

and a dodecatet = 12

and a triskadectet = 13

whaddaya call an eleven piece band ????

An eleven-sided polygon is called an undecagon . So perhaps an "undecatet."

A nonet is also anything which is not "et."

SDCS:

Thans for the info ..

and following your last thought: by that logic , the five pound
super-dry fruitcake
that Aunt Sally sends every Christmas
that winds up either as a doorstop
or being forwarded on
to a relative you dislike
even more than Aunt Sally
for sending it originally ...

would qualify as a "non- et"

Yes, and after about 14 or 15 years they become completely nonettable.

If you'd like to hear one, take a look at http://www.bigbuzzard.co.uk/music/ - some MP3s are available there. Band line up is:
Vox
Piano
Bass
Drums
Guitar
2 Trumpets
Trombone
Alto
Tenor
Baritone

- though it's only an undecatet(!) if the singer counts, which I realise is debateable...

I always thought it would be better with a Vibes/percussion player in the mix too.
Always interested to hear what anyone thinks of it.

Andy
