Cecil Taylor + II0

Might be of interest:

"Owner Of The River Bank" (Enja) by Cecil Taylor and the Italian Instabile Orchestra will be released (in Germany) on October 20th.

Sounds potentially great, Martin. Studio session? Concert? Anybody heard any of it?

An hour long CT composition, recorded at the Ruvo Di Puglia festival in Italy.

OK, I wasn't sure if I'd post this, but since there's a CT thread, and I'm still REALLY excited...

I ate dinner with Cecil Taylor 2 nights ago!! I went to a celebration of the life and work of poet Ted Joans, and CT read a poem, and then played a short piece on piano (the first time I've gotten to hear him live). Steve Dalichinsky was another poet reading, and we made fast friends, and after the event, he invited me to a dinner that I couldn't have gotten into otherwise (even though my own school put on the event, and I'm up to my ass in debt for the rest of my life because of it!).

Anyway, I sat with Steve and his wife Yuko on my right, beat poet/musician David Amram on my left, and CT next to him! I got to ask Cecil about jamming with Dolphy in Manhattan, working with Frank Wright, Albert Ayler's awesome sound, Sunny Murray, and much more. CT spoke SO highly of William Parker (and spoke highly of very few other living musicians), that I felt oddly proud... I don't know exactly how old CT is, but he didn't seem it. He was really nice, very classy, a little odd, and I feel totally priviledged to meet him (and get a free $30 meal...). How often do you get to meet a true legend and artist?

"I don't know exactly how old CT is..."

No one does. It's a matter of some controversy, apparently.

Key word is "potentially", but I'm an optimist! Still, I'm getting this as soon asap.

Johnny you lucky bastard! Thanks for sharing the anecdote. It reminds me of my impromptu hosting of a dinner with Nathaniel Mackey and the late Ed Dorn in my dilapidated old college apt.

From what I've heard (was it on this board or from a friend in Italy?), the concerts, though generally well received, didn't really take advantage of the "personality" of the Instabile Orchestra--that it was basically a Cecil Taylor large ensemble where the musicians just happened to be the Italian Instabile Orchestra.

Hey, I'm with you Johnny. I feel proud of William just hearing about this. Cecil knows his shit. And most of us know that William deserves all the accolades that he gets.

New Little Huey Orchestra disc out on Splasch! From the CBGB portion of the 2002 Vision Fest. It's extremely powerful stuff. If only they'd have been able to release the entire performance. It was two sets, and it seems that they only took a chunk of each set. But what's there is very fine!

Frisco-Thanks for work on the Splasch! disc--I've had my eye on it, and now I think I'll pounce...

Speaking of CT, has anyone heard the reissue "Student Studies"? I suppose I'll have to pick it up... Still, the most recent CT I own is, shamefully, "Winged Serpent," so I wanted to move forward from there...

I have Student Studies on a Japanese 2 lp set. Great music with a great band, not sure how the sound of the reissue is. Maybe a search of the net would turn something up.

Saw 'Student Studies' in the store the other day and was curious about it--don't think I've ever heard the LP.

btw, I also noticed that a Japanese label had reissued two classic early ECM recodings, the Holland/Phillips duo and Music Improvisation Company. Both were going for around $27 though.

Hasn't Student Studies been available for a while (or was once available, maybe not oop) on CD from Black Lion as Great Paris Concert? I have that disc, and I might be wrong, but I think it is the same material. It was issued in the mid-90s, around the same time Black Lion issued the single disc version of the Monmartre material Trance, Hemphill's Coon Bidness, some Art Ensemble, etc. Good music, but the reissue quality is pretty pathetic. It would be nice to have a better copy.

As for the Japanese ECM reissues, at that price I'll be happy with my vinyl unless there's some fantastic extras on them!

There's a part of "Student Studies" where it sounds like the piano has been "prepaired". Kind of interesting.

Put together with a second piano in advance?

Music Improv Co. can be had on lp for under $10 or so. Not sure about the Holland/Phillips.
