Guelph Jazz Festival's visionary "jazz-opera" goes
nation-wide October 10.
The Guelph Jazz Festival is pleased to announce that the popular CBC
Radio 2 program, "In Performance" hosted by Eric Friesen, will be
broadcasting the premiere performance of the recent hit "jazz-opera,"
Québécité in its entirety on Friday October 10, 2003 at 8:00 p.m.
Featuring a libretto by Governor General's Award winning poet, George
Elliott Clarke and music composed by Juno-Award winning pianist, D.D.
Jackson, Québécité is a three-act, multicultural romance set in
modern-day Québec. The opera tells the sharply comic and moving story of
two inter-racial couples whose developing relationships expose the
perils and possibilities of loving across racial and cultural
boundaries. The principal characters are Laxmi, (accomplished classical
Indian singer, Kiran Ahluwalia) a student architect of East Indian
descent who was born in Bombay, India; Ovide (jacksoul vocalist, Haydain
Neale), an architect originally from Haiti; Collette Chan (experimental
jazz vocalist, Yoon Choi) a law student whose parents, avid jazz fans,
fled the Tiananmen massacre to find refuge in Canada; and jazz pianist
Malcolm States (one of New York's most sought after jazz and gospel
singers, Dean Bowman), a native Black Nova Scotian currently playing at
the jazz club owned by Collette's parents. As the story unfolds, the
couples learn to navigate the stormy waters of gender, race and culture
in order to establish relationships based on love that are firmly rooted
in mutual respect and understanding-relationships strong enough to
withstand the trials of opposing parents and clashing cultures.
The volatile plot-line is grounded by the musical performances of some
of the hottest improvisers in Canada. Featuring Peggy Lee on cello, Brad
Turner on trumpet, Jean Martin on drums, John Geggie on bass, and of
course, Jackson on piano, the Québécité quintet create some truly
extraordinary music together.
In addition to broadcasting the "jazz-opera" in its entirety, "In
Performance" will also air interviews with Clarke, Jackson, and the man
who initiated the entire project, Guelph Jazz Festival Artistic
Director, Ajay Heble. The interviews feature the three men discussing
the context of this important work and also providing insight into the
process that brought their shared vision to its fruition.
The premiere performance of Québécité took place in Guelph, Ontario at
the River Run Centre on Friday September 5, 2003 as part of the Guelph
Jazz Festival's 2003 programming. Québécité will be performed on October
17 & 18 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.
Toronto and area listeners may dial in to CBC Radio 2 at 94.1 FM.
