That's sad news. He was one of the greatest trombonists of all time. I had the great fortune to hear and meet him. Seeing him play duets with Spiegle Wilcox and hanging out drinking with him after the concert are fond memories. Condolences to all who loved him and his music.
RIP, Carl Fontana.

Carl Fontana - RIP
Carl Fontana, a jazz trombonist who once played with Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington has died in Las Vegas at 75. His brother -- Michael "Mickey" Fontana -- says he was slowed in recent years by Alzheimer's disease, but continued to play almost until his death.
Fontana's technique -- called "doodle tonguing" -- let trombonists play fast and clean, and set a new standard for the instrument. Fontana was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and got his start with a dance band headed by his father, Charles "Collie" Fontana. He was pursuing a master's degree from Louisiana State University when jazz master Woody Herman invited him to join the Third Herd. He settled in Las Vegas in 1957 -- and went on to play with Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra.
Fontana's survived by two brothers, two sons, one daughter and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Is there any way to consolidate the three Carl Fontana memorial threads? Just wondering because Graypencil posted this first followed by Hermann.

Carl Fontana had never received the recognition due him. He was a true innovtor on the bone.
At least there are a lot of examples of his great playing on record.
