Where is the real Petey buried?

Died 1938(?) Silver Spring, Maryland
or Calabasas, California

Everyone likes Petey from the Our Gang (a.k.a. "Little Rascals") comedies, the adorable pit bull with the magic marker circle around one eye. But not everyone agrees where he is buried.

The Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD, is the burial place of Jiggs, whose real name was General Grant, and who everyone says is the Little Rascals dog. But is Jiggs really Petey? If General Grant was his real name, and Petey was his Little Rascals name, where did "Jiggs" come from? And why does the grave have a picture of a bulldog on it? You want to be sure: otherwise it's like driving all day to reach the grave of one of the Three Stooges, only to discover that you are standing over Curly Joe DeRita.

Three thousand miles away, much closer to Tinseltown, is the grave of a "Petey" at the famous Pet Memorial Cemetery in Calabasas, CA. Pet Memorial is also home to other pet celebrities and celebrity pets like Steven Spielberg's Jack Russell, Rudolph Valentino's dog, Kabar, and Hopalong Cassidy's horse, Topper. Still, we think that this is a lesser Petey, and that Jiggs is our dog.

Here's our reasoning:

The Our Gang comedies were made from 1922-1944. There had to be more than one dog.
Jiggs lived for ten years, from 1928-1938. Surely, Jiggs would have been in his prime during the Gang's glory years.
Was it mere coincidence that Jiggs died the same year that Hal Roach stopped producing Our Gang and sold the rights to MGM? (Remember, dog food costs money, and this was during the Great Depression).

Clearly, more research needs to be done.

Even if we're wrong, Aspin Hill is a nice place to visit. It's the final resting place of J. Edgar Hoover's dogs (including Spee De Bozo), Rags "The Dog Who Went To War," and 40 humans who insisted upon being buried alongside their pets. Aspin Hill ran out of money in the 1980s, and Silver Spring was going to turn it into a shopping center. PETA stepped in and bought it, but much of the grounds still haven't been reclaimed from the undergrowth. Who knows what other pet celebrities may yet be uncovered?

We do know of one grave that is definitely NOT Petey's. It's the one with the picture of Petey on it at Hollywood Memorial Cemetery. This is actually the grave of fellow Rascal Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, who died in 1959 in a dispute over a $50 debt.

It appears that the writers above haven't really done their homework. Here's the

ultimate Petey page.

Easily one of the most bizarre and surrealistic of all the "Our Gang" silent films, Dog Heaven begins as the beloved Pete the Pup is rescued from committing suicide (!) by one of his canine pals. The broken-hearted Pete then explains (via dialogue titles) why he wants to end his life. It seems that Petey's lifelong master Joe Cobb has been ignoring him in favor of a pretty young girl. Even worse, Joe has accused Pete of trying to drown the girl, when in fact the dog was rescuing her from a watery grave. Just in the nick of time, Joe and Petey are tearfully reuinited --- but this is hardly the end of our doggie hero's troubles. If the viewer doesn't gasp in astonishment at the opening scene, wherein Pete the Pup fashions a noose and attempts to hang himself, the viewer's jaw will certainly drop during the segment in which Pete and a band of mongrel dogs getting blind stinking drunk on bootleg booze! Originally released on December 17, 1927, "Dog Heaven" was the earliest of the "Our Gang" silents to be reissued under the "Little Rascals" banner in the 1950s. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I told you that Petey was up to no good...

Little Rascals "Petey" serves out community service sentence pulling children on sleds
01/29/01

Out of work actor Petey, the lovable and famous dog from the Little Rascal's motion pictures, began serving out a sentence for aggravated assault today. Petey was sentenced to forty hours of community service pulling small children on sleds through the park on snow days. The service is part of a program to help wayward animals learn valuable lessons through forced public labor.

The feisty pit bull was arrested on January 2nd after allegedly assaulting a Scottish terrier that had been sniffing the butt of his date that evening. Witnesses said Petey became enraged; barking wildly and then began viciously biting the Terrier. This went on for several minutes until the dogs were pepper sprayed into submission by local police.

Petey was put on a leash and taken to the humane society where he stayed until his attorney paid his $5,000 bail.

Petey's case came before Judge Paul "Spanky" Williamson of the Minneapolis District Court just two weeks ago. The prosecution reportedly sought to have Petey put to death, citing another recent incident involving Petey and several performers at the Cat Club, a local Minneapolis strip club. Although Petey was not formally charged for allegedly sexually harassing the performers on several occasions, Police responded and filed reports on each incident. The prosecution used these to establish Petey as a violent and dangerous canine.

It was also revealed by witnesses that Petey had been drinking prior to both incidents and had a history of violent behavior when doing so.

"Although Petey is prone to violent acts, I don't believe he is a true threat to society unless he's drunk," Judge Williamson said in his formal ruling. "I therefore order Petey to stay sober and perform forty hours of community service for the Minneapolis parks department."

Petey, who has been living in Minnesota and working odd jobs since his appearance in the Little Rascals motion picture, spoke about the verdict after his sentencing last week.

"I'm grateful the Judge decided not to entertain the prosecutions bid for the death penalty." Petey said through an interpreter. "I'm not really looking forward to pulling a bunch of brats around for forty hours, but it's better than being put back in a kennel."

Only one of Petey's former colleagues could be reached for comment. When asked what he thought about the incident, Buckwheat told reporters, "I don't know about you, but a sled ride sounds o'tay!"
