Yeah, I've got those. Naturally, I'd love to hear the symphonies by, you know, Vienna Phil., but I'll take what I can get. The performances are OK. I love the music. As I've said before, his mature style is something like Sessions (but less awkward and with fewer poor instrumentation choices) and the Schoenberg of "Jakobsleiter." He also reminds me some of Fartein Valens, but he's more interesting and more contrapuntal. He's also got the Brits Brian and Rubbra beat IMHO. He developed his own version of (something like)serialism, writing a widely unread classic on the subject.
Anyhow, I think it's all top notch. The symphonies, the cello sonatas, the songs, the incidental music, the string quartet. I wish he'd written more of it. (But since nobody would play it during his lifetime, I guess we shouldn't be too surprised at how little he left. Note to self: don't write any more unfavorable reviews if you want to get your pieces performed.) The piece Brian liked at my house is Sym. #4, which has an incredibly kickin' first movement. Gordon once asked if I knew the time signature of the opening, but I don't.
