There Is A Fire In My Soul
It comes from the inside out. I cannot explain in words what it is or how it affects my soul...but it EXISTS.
Something's there that pushes me to excel, to succeed, to dream. My inspiration comes from unbelievable sources. Unbelievable people. Unbelievable results.
I do not know what it is or how to explain it...but it is THERE in my soul.
I am driven. I cannot tell you why.
What is it? What makes us strive to be better than we were? What makes us go beyond what we knew before? There is a hunger...a NEED that must be fulfilled. It is an emptiness. It is a desire. It is a sickness that no doctor can cure.
The closer I get...the farther away I am from understanding it. And I am tortured by my inability to explain it. There MUST be a reason.
Musicians have it. Writers try to express it. Artists accept it. The rest of us wonder...why?
What DRIVES the Soul of Creation? What makes an artist? What creates the music? What writes the page?
Tell me.

I have no idea. I have no such urges myself. I'm content to muddle on in unchanging mediocrity. Fire? Drive to excellence? Sorry, no idea.

Now that you mention it, Henry Mars has some kind of fire going on in him somewhere too. Great to have so many special people around!

You flatter me, Steve. In fact I'm only doing a so-so job.

While I was trying to find back my red pump, I thought winter was coming fast so here's the red boot.
Hotter? .. warmer!

Totally. I'm all about that. It's taken years of alternately achieving and avoiding creativity, ingenuity, hard work, and initiative to discover that special zone above mediocrity but below excellence which I call the "go with the flow" zone. It's the zone in which you know people value your work, but don't really look at you as the go-to guy. It's that rare zone where you can almost certainly keep your job and do, you know, some nice work, but not necessarily be expected to come up with the solution to every problem.
It's been tough getting there, and I can't say I'm there yet: that foul demon of vanity still sneaks its ugly head every once in a while, especially during meetings when I can't help but volunteer some brilliant, elegant, and well-thought solution to some technical problem. But the day will come when I will be able to keep my mouth shut. Ah yes, perfect anonymity.
