I'd review a CD, but which one do you have in mind?

BTW, anybody seen Johannes?

I have only bought a handful of new cd's this year. Been getting expensive trying to keep up with everything. I gave up. I can get 4 or 5 records(sometimes more) for the price of a cd.

You wrote what, one review? Admittedly, it was the length of ten, but still...

He's not saying he's going to write them, just provoke them.

Pathetic! The whole lot of you!

: D

ONE?! I wrote a bunch!

I checked in at Record Reviews 'cause I haven't bought a lot of jazz CD's lately (but a LOT of CD's of everything else!) and I wanted to find out what was new/good/great/best-ever. Nadda - zip - zilch!

BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Someone (maybe Oz) review Nat's CD. (If Oz does it - put in a lot of your whimsical la-di-da stuff. ; )

By the way - if I haven't said it in a year - You SUCK OZ!

: P

There are only 2 pages of records review if you go back 30 days. If you change the settings to back to the beginning there are 6 pages +

I would like to see not just more record reviews, but more comments. Today I started a thread on the new Pat Martino CD, but only one response so far--and the poster heard only a tidbit. I've seen little thread action on things like Lovano's latest and Tyner's latest. I usually don't rush to buy new releases, but I'd like to know what's out there that's good to excellent--things I can put on my Christmas list.

I'm mainly burning CD's these days, most often replacing things I have on record and tape. I'm thinking of putting up a review or two on releases from some years back--such as Haden's "Dream Keeper."

Wazzup All!
I often wonder about the lack of discussion about the latest stuff on the corner. Releases by the following artists are records I've bought this past year (I think!?). In no particular order:

Michael Brecker
Randy Brecker
Hiram Bullock
Carla Bley
Dave Sanborn
Pete Escovedo
Dennis Chambers
Bill Evans
Rickie Lee Jones
Tom Harrell
Dave Weckl
Roy Hargrove
Christian McBride
Manhatten Transfer
Caribbean Jazz project
Eddie Palmieri
Jerry Gonzalez
Chano Dominguez
Michel Camilo
Cab 4
Bobby Sanabria
Papo Vazquez

.......and this is just SOME of the more recognizable names. This type of music gets little notice at this site, it's a shame because every one of the names on that list is creating exciting music that falls under the Jazz umbrella. The 1st response to my post of course will be; 'well Chaz, why don't YOU start the ball rollin'?". I guess it's 'cause I've been hangin' here on the corner for awhile now, and since I rarely see mention of the Contemporary/Fusion/R&B/Rock/Latin/Improvisational type of music I prefer to listen to, it leads me to believe that there ain't much interest in it around here. It makes me wonder when I go to a concert because these artists sell out wherever they appear, I guess none of the concert-goers hang out here. Last week I went to see David Sanborn, he was great, the theater was SRO, his latest record on Verve features Christian McBride, Russell Malone, Mike Manieri, Steve Gadd, Don Alias, a killa band by anyone's estimation, yet, not a peep here. I mean, it's no big deal, I've felt this way for years, I just thought it kinda tied in to the subject!

Seriously, if you like a CD, and you want to see some discussion of it, start a thread. I start one every now and then on a CD I've bought (two just recently), they don't always get much traffic, but as long as I get to discuss the disk with a few other peeps, that's great, and besides, if you think this music is so great, why not let people know with a short review of your own? Part of the purpose of putting out a review is to say, "hey, peeps might like this disk," or "hey, don't waste your money!"

We've got to outdo the creeps over in the political wing of JazzCorner. This is called JazzCorner, after all. You guys start posting a flurry of stuff about jazz. I'm doing my bit over at my thread, but it's slow even over there! Come see me. Start a discussion. I'm about to post about the hang in Connecticut at Pepe's in New Haven with Jimmy Cantiello, Shrugs, me, Jimmy's wife Joanne and her sister and her sister's husband (who's practically a JC'er). We talked about as many JC'ers as we could, sort of "compared notes". It was wonderful!

You wanna tell 'em about it, Jimmy or shrugs?

And where's my LundPhee CD, dude?

With all due respect Dennis, that would belong in the Alley.

Seriously, I think the fact that not much is happening anymore in the record review section just reflects how diverse the jazz scene has gotten. With all the new stuff coming out (and the focus of the review section is probably new issues) we are lucky if two or 3 people listen to the same records.

Uli - and would you say that posters check to see before they post reviews as to how many others are interested in the said album ?

I do read most of the reviews and if the recordings/artists are foreign to me but the review is glowing (with enough description so that I roughly know what to expect) I do go ahead and get the recording. I've just recently started on this thing where I would post one review per week, which I do; I hope that some will prove useful to others.

And I also think that the focus need not be on new-issues, there are many recordings where I would really appreciate some comments from others before making the investment. Incidentally, that's how most of the action in r.m.c.r (classical newsgroup) gets started - someone asks whether such and such album is good etc and others, then, voice in. I'll try to get one such thread started regarding the Mosaic box-sets, let's see how it'll turn out.

Such a thread exists - search for "Mosaic Select" - admittedly, I started it for the Select series, but we could change the thread title.

See also the recently started thread on the Mulligan Mosiac set (which I just love).

[EDIT] - I changed the title of the Mosaic thread to refer to boxed sets as well as the Select series.

I did see that Tanager, but I can't delete the thread I've created so I think we're now stuck with two very similar threads.

I would also think that it'd better if reviews for the likes of the Mulligan Box Set be put under Record Reviws and not Speak Out. It helps me keep things simpler when looking for reviews (I just sort the threads and not do a search since I find the search feature, or rather its results, quite cumbersome). What do the others think?

As a rule, I agree - threads on a specific release should be under Record Reviews. Lois created the thread, however, so...

No, I just think it's not much fun to post a review and not much is happening.

I do read the reviews too and like you, if it comes with a rec by somebody whose insights I trust and whose taste are in the same region as mine I might get a record. I guess it all depends what one expects from a review. While it maybe valuable to know somebody's opinion on how good or not they think a record is. But at the end of the day this is not what I am looking for. This is not to be critical of those who do reviews. The effort is truly appreciated. I am personally not much of a reviewer and certainly don't think I have more insights to offer other than whether I like it or not.

Your milage may vary but for me it's no different than what I get out of the jazz press. It ain't much worth for a consumer guide for me. Probably because I am old it does not get above what I consider just hype. And this is where we are probalby missing the boat a bit here. Just my take of things of course. People who are or were willing to share insights were frustrated by the opinionaters.

Enough of this rant. In short, we need Erik back.

Dennis, you sould say something on your thread in "Ask The Musicians". You should also talk about your recording session here in Connecticut. Don't forget to tell everyone that Connecticut is not as bad as Shrugsy makes it out to be. BTW, I hope your drive to Logan went well...................

I've been meaning to review the latest Lovano and Gerald Wilson disks, both of which I've given a couple of extensive listenings. I'll try to get those out next week, maybe, since I'll be on a business trip without much else to occupy me at night.

It is nice when we get those beautiful days but I seem to remember that the majority of last winter it was too cold to snow. Or we got so much that you could barely see out your window. Not to mention the winter of 01 - 02 where we saw barely any snow.
I hope things get better after this winter which is supposed to be a bad one compared to recent years. If y'all get another spring and summer like this years it will mean more rained out holidays and another shitty fall. The leaves this year were nothing to leave home for.

The leaves in Maine were burning this year, in a good way! I hope you're wrong about this winter being a harsh one. I've been up here 15 years now and it's getting old indeed.
