Herbie Hancock clears the room.

Well, not really, but I did watch in amazement as nearly 400 people rushed
for the doors within the first half hour of the Herbie Hancock Quartet concert
last saturday w/ Gary Thomas(s), Scott Colley (b), Terry Lynn Carrington (d).

The good news is that over 1,000 people not only hung in, but gave two standing
ovations and spent over five minutes clamoring for an encore to the one set
concert.

I would describe the music as edgy, high energy, telepathic, virtuostic,
abstract, cerebral, polyrhymic, unsettled, floating, aggressive, funky, hard,
challenging, uncompromised, irreverant, probing, searing, stretching, pulling,
steamrolling, ridiculous, sublime, penetrating, shocking, lasting, beautiful,
ugly, fleeting, gone. I can't remember a single melody.....

I loved every moment of it!

I'm curious, any idea why 400 people rushed for the door?

I had thought about driving down to catch this one, but the schedule wouldn't allow (f**king work). Sorry I missed it.

a) They were expecting to hear Dave Brubeck.
b) Terry Lynn's "beat's" were sending encrypted shutdown code to their pacemakers.
c) Tix were only $40, so of course, "this must suck".
d) Closed minds, closed ears, closed hearts.

I'd guess they were folk who only knew of him from things like 'Rockit'.

Yeah, I should have guessed.

Any idea where to keep up with the gigs going through Maine. I'm within driving distance, although it's not exactly a short drive. I would go down to catch shows like this but I always seem to find out about them the day before the show and don't have time to make arrangements. If you know of any websites where I can keep up to date I'd appreciate it.

Hey Claude, you can get a pretty complete calendar here:
http://www.invisiblemusicrecords.com.../Calendar.html

Also, if you send a blank email to jazzevents-subscribe@topica.com you will received email notifications of jazz gigs in the area.

Come down this weekend and catch one of my shows with Bobby Watson! (see November 7,8,9&10 on the calendar link above).

Come say hi if you make it down.

Thanks Mark,

Probably won't make it down this weekend, I have some committments that would be difficult to get out of. I will be getting down at some point though. I'm sure I can talk my wife into a shopping trip with a little jazz on the side. Looks like you are keeping pretty busy with the CD release and all. I hope I can catch you guys at some point. Any gigs coming up in December?

Sure, but not with Bobby. He lives in Kansas City these days, so these gigs took a bit of planning and scheduling. Stuff will be posted to the calendar and email listserve around Dec.1st.

All the best for this weekend's gigs. I always seem to find out about things after it's too late to change plans. When I get a chance to go to Portland I will make a point to time it around one of your gigs.

I hope these gigs went well, hope you can post a "from the musician's perspective" review when you get a chance.
