Herbie's new Quartet

I was very happy to attend a good show here in forgotten California. I was very pleasantly surprised by H. Hancock's quartet. I admittedly have not followed his recent work that closely. I was amazed at the quality of this quartet. Scott Colley on bass, Terry Lynn Carrington on drums, & Gary Thomas on tenor. Not having access to many live shows, it was very refreshing to here such a motivated group. Scott Colley seemed to live in a groove of his own except when he was ?talking? to Herbie; yes he was jamming. Gary Thomas played with an understated elegance and tone, which spoke very loudly and at times I thought I heard Getz!. Terry Lynn Carrington was incredibly adept at motivation and finding the right timbre at the right time. Herbie was subtle and aggressive. There were moment when I felt like the interaction between the group resembled Braxton?s quartet on Santa Cruz.

Synergy is exactly the word I would use to describe the feeling I had at this show. This performance was a Chico State University. I am very excited to see an experienced statesman not resting in the past.

I caught this group in Durham, NC, last year. Colley was the highlight for me, just a monster with a great groove. He locked in with Herbie several times and just cooked all evening. I loved his sound.

The rest of the group was outstanding as well, although Gary was undermiked, IMHO - I had trouble hearing him at times.
