Sun Golden Island, R.I.P.

I learned this weekend that my favorite NYC Chinatown restaurant has gone out of business. This was the place that made the best soft shell crabs in NY. I know the JC folks I've taken there will share my sorrow. I know that Cantiello, Olewnick, Sisco, Shrugs, Paul B., Tom Storer, Josh Heisler, Adrienne, & Laurie Tvedt have been there; I may be forgetting one or two other folks. I was hoping to do Thanksgiving there, and I'll have to find a new spot for the annual "Welcome Back Soft Shell Crabs" dinner.

I'm still reeling from the news. Even worse, you're working now, reducing the amount of gallavanting time available to you for locating a new, *GREAT* restaurant.

btw, that Middle-Eastern place I mentioned to you yesterday, rated by Jonathan Reynolds in the NYT as possibly the best in the city, is Moustache on Bedford St. Reynolds cracks me up, incidentally, and I always make a point of reading his columns.

Shit! What happened? That was a great restaurant. Quite possibly the best Chinese place I've tried, anywhere. Very sorry to hear that, Pete. Damn.

Well, you know your mission.

I hope you don't welcome back your house-guests the same way you do the soft-shell crabs.

This has been a bad year for crab joints. A friend in S.F. tells me that my favorite Vietnamese roast Dungeness crab place, Jasmine House, on Clement, just closed. A google reveals that it was also one of Cheech Marin's favorite neighborhood places. And here's what SFgate said:

"Jasmine House: Jasmine House is deservedly famous for its roast crab and its garlic noodles. Don't walk down Clement Street near this restaurant while you're hungry, because the delicious odors of garlic and simmering seafood will drive you insane."
