Source: Brandeis student slit own throat at party

A Brandeis University senior high on psychedelic mushrooms slit his own throat before falling head first over a third-floor balcony in Gloucester in an apparent suicide, a source said yesterday.
Eliezer ``Elie'' Schwartz, 21, was partying in the 5 Pirates Lane condominium with at least four other students when he tumbled off the balcony about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Schwartz's best friend, Michael Chapper, 22, sustained a cut to his hand trying to yank the serated knife away from the economics major, the source said. Police found student Craig Glaslow, 21, lying on a bed with dried blood on his mouth, according to the Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence. They also found bloody footprints leading to the balcony.
Schwartz, the son of a prominent New York rabbi and a dean of a Jewish theology college, died just before 3 a.m. Sunday at Addison Gilbert Hospital, said Stephen O'Connell, spokesman for the Essex District Attorney's Office.
Schwartz was to be best man in his brother's wedding next month. His sister is a freshman at Brandeis.
