Monica Lewinsky needs a date

Lewinsky says her past has hurt her love life

Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Posted: 9:03 PM EST (0203 GMT)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Monica Lewinsky says her White House liaison is a liability on the dating scene.

The intern infamous for her affair with President Bill Clinton said in the December issue of GQ magazine that she dates occasionally but her romantic relationships have been short-lived.

Lewinsky, 30, said in the interview she sympathized with the men she meets, saying she, too, would be intimidated by the tales of her past.

"If I were a guy and I'd heard all those things about a girl, I don't know that I'd want to take her out," Lewinsky told the men's magazine.

But Lewinsky also admitted she is impatient when men are not as responsive to her as she would like them to be.

"The one thing I don't do well with, with a guy, is ambivalence," she said. "I want to shake them and say, 'C'mon, just like me! Do what I say!"'

In the nearly six years since news of Lewinsky's dalliance with Clinton broke, leading to his 1998 impeachment and later acquittal by the U.S. Senate, Lewinsky has designed handbags and, most recently, hosted a reality TV show.

But the woman that nearly cost Clinton the Oval Office said she wanted to dispel rumors that the scandal had made her wealthy.

"One of the huge misconceptions about me in the past few years is that I have made a fortune from this," Lewinsky said. "People who have this idea that I have millions of dollars or even a million, or close to a million, are off their rocker."

I would think that the fact that everyone on earth knows she gives head would keep her phone ringing off the hook. You don't suppose her looks and her personality play any role in her being lonely.

Maybe she should take up cigars herself (or take cigars up herself).

I feel sympathy for Monica and always have.

First of all, she's hardly ugly. Maybe she's no Victoria's Secret model, but she's not ugly by a long shot. I wish I had nice thick straight hair like that. I wish I was that ugly.

Second, she was foolish. It's hard to keep quiet though when you're excited and "in love" and one wants to confide that secret to *someone*. Monica was foolish to confide in Linda Tripp. To me, Tripp is a rat.

I personally don't think any of that makes Monica a horrible human being. Stupid perhaps, but I'll bet she's a bit smarter now (or at least one would hope).

To be honest, though, the first thought to cross my mind was exactly what GG noted.

Anyway, it's gotta be a drag to be Monica. People are judgemental and mean and can't resist poking fun.

The problem, of course, is the butt.

Any guy who dates Monica Lewinsky has to come to terms with the fact that his lump o' sugar is the butt of more jokes than Pee Wee Herman, Michael Jackson, and Paris Hilton combined. Now that doesn't matter "if you really care." But all guys know this on the first date, when they cannot possibly "really care" yet.

Regarding what you said, Cookie, I totally agree with you.

I saw her on an HBO special, where she was invited to answer questions before a live audience. I was impressed with how well she handled herself and how self-aware she is.

Hey, she was what, 22? Give the girl a break.

Seriously, I think Monica is HOT. Give me a big-titted, zaftig woman anyday over some skinny, anorexic thing. A hot, exotic Jewess with large jucy breasts beats out some anemic wasp anyday, at least as far as this hillbilly is concerned.

Some of you gentlemen are really letting it all hang out on this thread. It's instructive.

Clay--"A hot, exotic Jewess"? Have you ever run that one by someone you know?
"Jewess," "Negress," tigress, lioness.

From the American Heritage dictionary entry for Jewess:

NOUN: Offensive -- A Jewish woman or girl.

USAGE NOTE: Like many other English nouns in which the suffix -ess is added to a gender-neutral word to indicate femaleness, the terms Jewess and Negress are now widely regarded as offensive. . . .

Clay should know better. The rest of his description wasn't much fun for me to read either.

Hmmm. Didn't know either were considered particularly offensive. Does this apply for any feminizing suffix, eg, latina, filipina? Are there any appropriate single-word terms for Jewish or African-American women? I'm really curious, not trolling.

The only time I'd seen/heard Jewess used was in the old Gilda Radner "Jewess Jeans" skit from SNL. It never occurred to me there was any negative connotation attached, and I think you might be a little quick on the draw, Rita, to assume Clay would have known either. I'll make a point of avoiding using the word, however.

I asked the two jewish women in my office - neither was aware of any negative connotation, either, to the word, "Jewess." They were sorta surprised anyone would think so, actually.

Again, it's just an educated guess, Monte! They seem so damn uptight, you have to figure, missionary's the only way for these guys!

I'm Jewish, and I don't take offense at Clay's post. It's a guy thing. I understand where he's coming from.

Here's the part of the definition that I didn't quote before:

It is interesting to note that the objection to words formed with the -ess suffix does not apply to words such as Latina and Chicana, whose contrasting forms Latino and Chicano are not gender-neutral but rather refer even in English primarily to males. See Usage Notes at –ess, Latina(1). [I'm not quoting the usage notes, but anyone is free to look them up.]

Nope, there are no appropriate single-word terms for Jewish women. They're Jews or Jewish women, etc. AFAIK, there are no appropriate single-word terms for African-American women, assuming that everybody doesn't or shouldn't throw "sistah" around, but I'm hardly the one to comment.

Tanager--There's a reason that Clay should know better, and he knows what it is. The two Jewish women in your office may not think of "Jewess" as being offensive, but obviously enough people do for the term to be labeled offensive in a dictionary.

RBS--I'm Jewish too, only I'm a Jewish woman.

Bluenoter--serious question--is calling someone "a Jew" also offensive? I've never been exactly sure about that.

I too feel sorry for Monica's laughingstockhood. She was so young; the Pres was such a jerk.

I don't know whether the Christian right condones oral sex, but I know that in the faith I grew up in, it was forbidden. Sex is for procreation, oral sex is not an act of procreation.

I had a disturbing interaction that other day, in which an acquaintance was sort of giving me the third degree about my faith. I told her my mom is Mormon and I was raised in the church, etc. and my dad is not really religious. My father's lack of religion seemed to bother her and she asked if he was raised in a religion and I didn't know what to say except that his mom was Lutheran. blah, blah, blah. I then turn around and ask her what religion she is and she tells me, I thought somewhat piously, "Christian." I was so taken back that I didn't press the conversation further. But what the hell does that mean?

Your point is well taken, bluenoter. Understood.

I think that this is one of the ways that men and women cross wires. Men have a way of communicating with each other which can be pretty adolescent and enjoyable when you're doing it. It's a way of bonding and enjoying each other's company.

But if I talk like that to my wife, she 1) doesn't get it and 2) gets offended.

So I try not to talk that way in front of her.

No! That's what we're supposed to be called! The noun is "Jew"; the adjective is "Jewish." The only thing offensive--and it's highly offensive--is the slang verb, as in "I jewed him down" (meaning bargained him down aggressively, cheated him, etc.). Edit: Well, to elaborate a little, using "jew" as an adjective is usually highly offensive because of the context, as in "The story was planted by the jew media." But that's getting way out in right field, and you'd never say anything like that anyway.

Thanks for asking, Tip.

"jew" and "gyp" (both originally included as verbs) were relatively recently removed from the list of words acceptable in Scrabble much to the consternation of serious players! It's a fine balance between offensiveness and getting rid of tough j's, w's and y's....

Maybe the main problem with dating Monica would be all the people pointing at you and whispering. And all those cameras going off would be a problem too.

I've never thought she was ugly, she tends towards being heavy, but it's comical for Americans to crack on her about her weight seeing as how we're the fattest country in the whole world. There was a recent poll where evn fat people don't like seeing fat people on TV or in movies. That says something I guess.

About the Christian Right, oral sex IS sodomy and I believe sodomy's one of their pet peeves, wasteful spilling of seed and all that.

These people are so insecure about their own faith that they feel the need to tell you about yours. It's none of her damn business what your religion is anyway.
