There'll Always Be a Catholic Church

BOSTON ARCHDIOCESE IS SUED BY SAN BERNARDINO DIOCESE. Calvin Sims. The New York Times. 2003/04/03. Page A14. On March 31 the Diocese of San Bernardino, California, filed a lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Boston for misrepresentations and suppression of information concerning the Rev. Paul R. Shanley, a priest who had a record of sexual abuse. Shanley, who transferred from Boston to San Bernardino in 1990, had been accused of sexually abusing young people as early as 1967. He has since been accused of sexual abuse in California as well. The suit, which is believed to be the first time one U.S. diocese has sued another, is seeking to make the Boston diocese entirely responsible for potential damages from a suit filed by Kevin English against both dioceses, claiming sexual abuse by Shanley in California.
