Recently, a great article about organ great Larry Young's life and art appeared in the New Jersey Star Ledger (
Larry Young's Tragic Genius. I had been told several years ago that Blue Note Records lost contact with Larry's estate so I called the author of the article, Guy Sterling, and asked him if Larry's wife and/or brother had been in contact with Blue Note, but I also complimented him for such a well written story.
Guy's initial response was mixed. I thought I had said something wrong and clarified my comments. I then found out that Guy was very upset that this Jazz great lies in an unmarked grave. He couldn't believe it. He was so upset, he decided to do something about it. He asked me to "put it wherever it may be appropriate", so I'm posting it for my friends at Jazz Corner.
Guy e-mailed me the particulars:
WBGO-FM/Jazz Radio 88 in Newark is accepting contributions to defray the costs of putting a headstone on Larry Young's grave. The station's address is:
WBGO/Jazz Radio 88
54 Park Place
Newark, NJ 07102
All checks should be made out to "WBGO/Larry Young Fund."
Guy specifically asked me to, "If possible, and for a couple of reasons, I would like to know about anyone making a contribution. One, I hope to write about this project and would like to give as much credit as I can. Also, I want to make certain all of the money that's contributed goes to the cause and that the headstone befits Larry's stature. It's OK for you to include my e-mail address with any posting."
Guy's e-mail address is:

If anyone sets up a benefit, please post it here as I would love to be there.
Later,
Kevin
