Turning off the sound

I know that there is an "off" button, but the sound in the menu bar is a very annoying feature of JC--is there any way to permanently turn that thing off? I often listen to internet radio while at the computer, and having that sound go off each time one's cursor passes over an icon is maddening. If the software allows it, please give us a default "off" mode.
