Melbourne, OZ

Hi all,

I know there was an Oz thread before, but I'm sorta too lazy to dig it up. What are any recommendations for taking in some live jazz in Melbourne? I'll be there from the 7th through the 21st of January. I would love to try and have a beer with anyone in those parts, too...

Hi Tanager - This publication may be of interest. The Jazz Scene magazine is a free monthly publication giving details of jazz events in Adelaide (South Australia), Melbourne (Victoria), and Sydney (New South Wales) as well as Australian Jazz Festivals, CD and jazz concerts reviews. The circulation of over 4,500 copies (1500 in each city) is distributed throughout Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and to subscribers around Australia. It can be picked up from most places where jazz is performed as well as selected CD/Music shops and tourist information centres. You can check it out online at:

www.jazzscene.com.au

The magazine may focus a bit too much on Trad, New Orleans and mainstream jazz for your taste but there's also a thread called "Australian Jazz Korner" in the General Music Discussion forum over on the AAJ board with lots of commentary on the contemporary jazz scene in Oz which you might like to have a glance at.

Have a great time.

Australians should check out the Pascal Schumacher Quartet when they tour Australia from the 10th to the 25th of May. Dates and venues on http://www.pascalschumacher.com Some of the best young Belgian (and Luxemburg) jazz musicians around, and probably the best band (which is not quite the same thing).
