Textbook

Evan Parker/Eddie Prevost

Most Materiall

Matchless

1997

I can think of no greater, singular exponent of reflective, antipodal acoustic improvisation than this recording. I truly love this album.

Michael,

You're like Chet Baker to Steve Reynolds's Lee Morgan.

I know, Ezana. . .this reeks of Reynolds, but that's cool. I didn't use any of *these* at least.

I don't get the title of the thread.

Michael,

Haven't you written any comments or reviews about this? I like both Parker and Prevost, so I would be interested in hearing more about this album.

Sure. . .it's about as dynamic a duo date one will hear. I'd perhaps favour the second disc. Evan, as always, doubles on tenor and soprano and Eddie plays, one could argue, a more conventional trap kit. That doesn't mean this recording lacks his shimmering bowed work. The percussionist somehow demands your attention throughout two discs. If I were to take one thing from this date, maybe Evan and Eddie run through a given pattern once to often. It's as if they attempt to travel as far away from one another sonically, only to plunge back as one with malice. . .like two musicians walking away from the other to the threshold of each other's audibility, and, slingshot back.--much of the ebbs of la mer, Whitman's waves/sex thing and all that stuff. It's a common motif esp. throughout the second disc. The first selection on the second disc, 'Nil Novum' is a veritable, living masterpiece. There is one subtle interlude (one of these plunging back into the other moments, again) where Evan spins a line directly from Trane (I found its doppelganger after many hours on the European Concerts box and/or 'Afro Blue Impressions--one of the 'Spiritual's). I'll do the homework again and post the track times this evening. Also, Reid, I might note that I find this one of the most accessible freely improvised recordings available. I am still astonished at the reception of this music when I play it. Again, there is not too much music across these two discs. I don't possess as much Evan as, say, Martin (I have maybe 8-10 dates) but his tenor work here evinces a feeling of urgent squeezing that I can't really materialise nor put properly into words. The only wordf I can think of is meretricious, in an attractive manner. I have devoured this recording for some time and it has bloomed magnificently. I'm writing this mid-lunch, so apologies for the run-on.

Thanks for the review, Michael. I think I remember you writing about this before. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for it.

$23.50 USD w/shipping from FE for the new Parker/Prévost, get it fixed. At least it's scheduled to arrive today. I'll talk about it here once digested.

I feel a bit different about Most Materiall than Michael does. I'd favour disc 1, as the duo steps into uncharted territory on this one, whereas disc 2 is a much more free-jazzy (and conventional) affair. (I have to admit, though, that I did not listen to the whole set in complete for quite some time.)

Looking forward to listening to the new stuff.

Me neither. But then, I'm not really trying.

yes - disc 2 is the jazz disc - I love to hear Prevost play jazz - didn't they call him Blakey of Brixton or some shit like that?

love how Evan incorporates the circular tenor stuff on the second session so seemlessly (a word? don't know?)

at first, one might not even know he is doing the fancy stuff with the breath

then again, I love "The Two Seasons" which is almost pure screaming free jazz with Evan playing tenor like there is no tomorrow

is there no tomorrow?

maybe even Clint would like this stuff>>>

nah!!!

sorry, Clint

Wait a minute. You're driving a car as a part of a job? Please make all NYC denizens aware of the general area you'll be traversing so we can take all appropriate precautions! Madre de Dios!

With your talents and your reputation it should not be too hard to get a reviewers job at one of those on-line mags.

I’d gladly hire Steve, but the pay would sadly be commensurate with virtually every other of the on-line mags (ie. Zilch)

Gordon B is leading a SWAT team of actuaries furiously calculating the likely financial impact of this. It ain't gonna be pretty.

It's my favorite EP cd, maybe my all-time favorite duo record.
