What Reynolds Favorite Are You Listening To Now
I hope this thread cheers up our friend, The Preacher. There aren't many old-timers who didn't discover a great cd or 50 from a rec from Steve.
DKV Trio- Live in Wels and Chicago, disc two (Chicago side).

Oh my, Gordon. My good friend Steven turned me onto the GREAT Horace Tapscott among many others. Now listening to "The Dark Tree 1 & 2".
Horace Tapscott - piano
John Carter - clarinet
Cecil McBee - contrabass
Andrew Cyrille - drums
Thank you, Preacher, for your passion....................

Great thread idea; what else but Exploded on Impact in the car on the way to and from basketball. I'm sure there's a direct correlation between listening to that and shooting out the lights.

Not an old timer, though a lurker for perhaps 6 years now - but I enjoy, on a daily basis, albums where Gustafsson or Vandermark are involved. Most recently - impropositions by gustafsson and version soul by spaceways incorporated.

For us younger types without 30 years experience in Jazz, Reynolds in his Jazz phase was our first contact with names like Black Saint, Soul Note, Mal Waldron, Andrew Cyrille, and Don Pullen.
During the era of Marsalis ascendancy, Reynolds performed an admirable public service.

Been listening to a number of Steve's faves, incl. David Murray & Milford Graves Real Deal and Fred Anderson's 2 Days in April.
I've also been checking out a couple that will become dear to Steve when he hears 'em:
Ken Vandermark/Paal Nilssen-Love - Dual Pleasure
Tony Malaby - Apparitions (with 2 drummers & a bass player: Rainey, Sarin & Gress)

Currently NP:
Joe Maneri - Get Ready To Receive Yourself
Grateful to Mr. R for many new sounds, chief among them (off top of head) would be LCJO, Fred Anderson, Mad Swede, Paul Dunmall, lot of Evan Parker I was unfamiliar with before, ditto Brotzmann, and others I cannot recall at the moment.
Hearing Harmos the first time was an eye opener. Added Portraits, Theoria, and Inscape-Tableaux in short order.

Before Pete Cherches or Steve (thelil) points it out, yes, "semi-legitimate issue" is a hilarious double entendre, and I wish I had actually thought of it consciously...

thank you Gordon for the kind words
feeling a bit better today - it is a day to day thing
but methinks the shoulder might need an operation
but the mind is still actively insane
but the people who havn't heard Colours Fulfilled need to give it a listen

I've never interacted with Steve before, but I've read his posts from the old board and he seems like an interesting guy with excellent taste. I just got back from a show he'd have loved-Brotzmann/Kessler/Drake in Milwaukee with Ken Vandermark joining in on the second set. Holy hell was it amazing. I'd seen Kessler, Drake, and KV live quite a few times but this was my first encounter with Brotz in the flesh. Things started out excellent, but somewhere in the middle of the first set, while Brotzmann was on clarinet, they just took off into the stratosphere. When it was announced during the intermission that Vandermark would be joining them during the second set I wasn't thrilled. Don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite reedsman, but Brotzmann, Kessler, and Drake we're so hot I didn't want anything to get in their way. Once the music started it took about 5 seconds for my fears to dissolve. The band was even more amazing with Vandermark. The 2 reeds played off each other beautifully with Kessler supplying some instense funk-filled bad ass bass and Hamid playing like a man possessed. Hearing beautiful music like that second set really makes it easier to deal with all the other bullshit in life.

This is my first post since returning from a long deployment, and I must say I'm listening to many of Reynolds' favorites now more than ever. 2 Days In April, Wels and Chicago, Braxton - Dortmund, and the *best* improvisational recording *ever*, At The Vortex, give me pleasure like no others. Knowing that I lived in the UK for 6 years, and didn't have a clue who Evan Parker was at the time, pains me to this day. I could've been there.
Tonight:
Hession/Wilkinson/Fell - Foom! Foom!
John Law - Exploded On Impact

I remember that morning well, StevieRey.
As for the thread subject, I've been turned on to many musicians and records I'd have otherwise probably not heard had it not been for Reynolds' ravings -- the one-man PR machine for the jazz a.g. -- way to many to list here.
My favorite Reynolds rec of this year is "Lunge." (See Record Reviews section of the bbs).
Last night I listened to another one that was a Reynolds rec and which I love, John Lindberg's "The Catbird Sings."

I wasn't aware that Dunmall and Trane had locked horns in the first place.
Steve. . .you dug Sanders' work off 'Four in the Afternoon' yet?
