Name This Event

I don't know if this belongs here or in the Alley or if it's kosher at all (Mone, Lois?) but I need a snappy, appropriate name for a weekly (Wednesdays) or bi-weekly music series I'm gonna start presenting soon. The music will range from avant, improv, electronica, new music to pop, folk, bluegrass, dub, alt-country and beyond...Vancouver artists and visitors.

Goes without saying, this is not really a $ maker for anyone involved. The idea is to help lubricate, nurture the scene(s) here. This town has a ton of good players, but not a very strong sense of community. There's a shortage of warm places to play. So, until I get the fantasy joint in order, this'll have to do.

Some of the cheese, I'm not sure I like, but I thought about:

Luscious / Dusty / Dusthog / Wicked / Stash / Nebulous / Nebula / Organica / Sound Check

...followed by Wednesdays...?

I kinda like some of the combos, too: Nebula Organica / Stimuli Organica / Stash Nebula

I know, they're kinda hippy-dippy. It's tough to know about the name's impact and staying power.

Name of my biz: Zula (means stash in Turkish)
Name of venue: ANZA Club

No promises that I'll go with a name from here, but the person producing the chosen name gets a small gift (cd or dvd or book) and my undying gratitude. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance, kids!
Cem

I like:

Spectrum Organica

And, if I were you, I'd drop the Wednesdays part...

What a coincidence, Cem, I have a radio show on Wednesdays at 90.7 FM, KSER, Everett, WA Sunlit Room, Wednesday 10:00am-noon PT that is mighty similar to what you're describing. Not much in the way of free improv or electronica, but otherwise quite comparable.

By the way, I hosted a show called "Jazz Spectrum" for 13 years in Vermont at WNCS-FM, so that word "spectrum" is a familiar one to me. It was very carefully chosen, and I thought it summed up the wide variety of music from many eras and many styles programmed rather nicely. It's always bugged me that when I left the station they kept the name, although the spectrum has narrowed more than a little to what I'd call primary colors, or perhaps pastels.

Another good word added to the pile, Bill. I like it as a pairing, too. Thanks much!
I'm not too comfy with Wednesdays, either, only useful for info sake...
I may be able to check out the tail-end of your show. I'll try...

They day after tuesday....Midweek Oasis

In my humble opinion, Tuesday is as waste of a day..it has no character..Monday is the first day of the working week, wednesday is the middle, Thursday is always kind if exciting because its nearly Friday.which is the nicest day of the week..

Abolish Tuesdays..and February fot that matter...waste of a month !!

Thank you folks! A couple more possibilities...I really can't decide yet.

Dibble, I wish we here in Canada had a long weekend in February. I'd be happy with an official day off for St. Patrick's Day or something.

dbrhythm, glad you enjyed the Zula shows. Many more great ones to come, hopefully. Please, do come say hello. Do we know each other? What's your opinion of Anza, particularly for this kind of music?

Good idea David. Though I've been dreading it for various reasons, I've been contemplating going non-profit, starting a society etc. for a long time. I would need to go non-profit for gov't funding of any sort. That's why I still haven't added anything to the name, yet I might soon, just don't wanna confuse people changing it twice. They know it as Zula & what it stands for.

Mike, Thanks. Hump did cross my mind, but haven't come up with a good pairing. Also, I'm trying to refrain from drawing adolescent attention (on that level). These shows may be all ages, actually; alcohol-free upstairs in the hall where the music happens and drinks downstairs at the pub. We'll see...

David, "olvayz sinkink", eh?

'Hump' is in no way an invite in my mind to welcome idiots, more like it's catchy, and memorable, not abstract, extemely familiar and identifiable.............. can get into logo ideas galore like a Camel with some sort of message on it, or a car going over a huge speed bump approaching FRI/SAT/SUN in the distance, that sort of thing, wherever the imagination takes you.

Great promo ideas, Mike. Thank you. The word is added to the pile of possibilities.

It could be something like:

Zula Nova
"Humpin' it like there's no tomorra"

Only if I had such large cojones...

David,

In my 8 years on the radio, the show was nameless for the first few months.

Once I got permission from Thelonious III [T.S. Monk] to use "Straight No Chaser" that was it for me.

The show has been on Sunday mornings primarily, so the entire title of the show in it's regular spot is Sunday Morning Music "Straight No Chaser"

When I did a Wednesday slot or anytime I fill in on that day of the week I call it Hump Day Music "Straight No Chaser."

We NYC area transplants are WAY LESS PC than you Monterey CA dudes;-)
