What entitles the BoSox to their own thread? Just for that, I'm gonna start a Cardinals Lunchbox thread (after a win, though).

well your man Webber hit a lucky 3 to overcome a massive 40 point assault from the Truth

after he choked on two free throws, of course

shame they lost the game - but maybe they give the ir first round opponent a series - we'll see

Ah, it's a "lucky" three when it's against Boston. It's clutch if it comes from Pierce. I get it.

Boston might have actually won that game if they had bothered to not play so lethargically in the first half.

Opening day was not so good. Sox need a stopper, not a group of late-inning options.

The strategy the hated BoSox are trying to employ is interesting, but they may be lacking a key element, namely a first class reliever. The idea isn't to go without a "stopper", it's to use that pitcher at more appropriate moments than automatically bringing him in in the 9th when they have a 3 run lead. For instance, if they're up 4-3 in the 7th with the meat of the opponent's order coming up or with a threatening situation, that's when you bring him in to hopefully quell the uprising. If they're up 8-5 in the 9th, almost any pitcher, even Chad Fox (usually) is going to be able to retire the side with less than 3 runs scoring. ie, there are no pitchers holding steady jobs this side of Tampa Bay with ERA's hovering around 27.00. It's stupid to routinely waste your best reliever in those situations, perhaps rendering him unable to pitch an inning the next day when he's really needed.

Now, the BoSox, unfortunately for them, don't really have a primo reliever, though they have guys who have been excellent in the past (Timlin, Howry, Mendoza). That's their problem. That and recovering from the psychological scar of giving up game tying or winning HR's to Terry Shumpert and Rey Sanchez on back to back nights.

well I didn't know Chad Fox wasn't even a ham 'n egger

Embree hopefullt will be that guy - with decent bullpen pitching they would be 5-1 or maybe even 6-0.....

a shame to lose the 2 games Pedro started despite him dominating those games

waiting for Manny to heat up

After the Orioles game yesterday, if I'm Pedro Martinez, I'm ready to throttle Chad Fox. Forcing in the winning run on a walk?

I'm thinking of a big turkey, especially when it comes to how the Red Sux usually finish their seasons.

You guys are too funny. Every year, Steve starts this thread. Sometime in August, we ask for the check.

Why not end the segregation and mix it up on the real baseball thread?

Obviously, even a second-class closer would be welcome in the 'pen. But what gets me is how the Sox always bring out their cardboard bats on days when Pedro pitches. They're putting people across the plate in droves, but put Pedro on the mound and all they can eke out is one measly run. Pedro will always keep you in the game, but the hitters have to win it with runs.

Lowe needs a date with Susan Sarandon.

Kevin Millar may be the pick-up of the decade.

if we could look back at the old threads, you would all see how I was pining away for that Millar deal to go through.

all this guys needed was full season and some exposure outside of Florida

that idiot Epteein knew about him - I guess the naysayers could only keep pointing out the deals he DIDN"T make

and Jeremy Giambi will be a big plus when all is said and done - as will David Ortiz

I guess Theo Epstein isn't the idiot the New York and National media would have you believe he is

and to hear the media types talk about Bill James would have one mistakenly believe that they might have actually bothered to read something he has written over the last 25 years.

I think I said about Millar - .320 25 HR 45 doubles 100 RBI

looks like that's the deal

and I havn't checked - but my guess is that they are probably 2nd or 3rd in the Majors in runs scored - and Manny isn't even hitting yet - and Millar is the only guy performing above expectations - the team is gonna score A THOUSAND runs, boys and girls!!!!

and seems to me Chad Fox might be OK after all...

I was trying to stick to the NBA thread, but this place is a slippery slope.

three facts:

1) 98 wins would not have qualified Boston for the playoffs last year. it's not going to win the division this year, and I doubt it'll be enough for the wild card.

2) the Yankees have outhomered their opponents so far this year 35-4.

3) the Yankees' magic number is 143.

Up for Reynolds.

You don't know the meaning of ugly until you see how KC totally self-destructed tonight in the 9th.

Single, wild pitch, HBP, single, sac fly, HBP, dropped popup by catcher, HBP, E3 to end the game.

3 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors, 3 HBP.

I think the 3 HBP's in an inning is a record

and after the Sox left a zillion runners on base last night, they did it agin tinight and beatem' again

so much for the Royals

beginning of the decline to their level of mediocrity

no way that management got that smart all of a sudden

98 wins, baby

and that will be plenty for the wild card this year

and Manny isn't even really hitting the ball that well - and he's hitting .363

Pedro is back in prime form

9 IP, 5 hits, 1ER, 0BB, 12 K's

and it look like Nomar is gear, Ortiz is starting to rake

second best offensive team in the majors, decent pitching, enormous depth

98 wins and a thousand runs, baby!

they may win or tie the game - but bunting with Joe Randa in the bottom of the 9th

.560 SA - - the second best hitter on the team??

Tony Pena will never be a good manager

if they lose this one - they would have blown 4 late inning leads to the Sox out of 4 games - and lost them all

hey - 22 - 12 isn't bad

they still have only lost 2 games late despite the poor bullpen performance - and last night's was more because of the Garciaparra throwing error

the firepower makes up for alot - this team is scoring runs in bunches and will continue to do so - no team (including the Yankees) have more depth than the BoSox.

ask anyone outside of Harold Reynolds or Joe Morgan about that

Can't argue with 8 unanswered runs. Good win last night breaking the Royals' streak, and hammering back today shows some class. The 'pen may be a mess but we've got some good blue-collar players this year: Walker, Jackson, Mueller, among them. Mirabelli and Hilly are off to a great start, too.
