A Word About Our Sponsor....and Gerald Wilson
Mack Ave Records kindly gave us a little Christmas present by presenting this banner to support Gerald Wilson's nomination for a Grammy this year in the Best Big Band area. Gerald has made a wonderful CD and I believe is the oldest nominee in the jazz categories. Please click thru and read more about Gerald (the record is smokin') and thanks for supporting our sponsors which in turn, helps to keep this board going!
Peace and blessings

You're right, Lois, about the new CD ("New York, New Sound"). It seems to be getting a pretty good push nationally, as I heard it here in Kansas City before it came out, and it deserves the promotion. It's my first Gerald Wilson CD, and very attractive from start to finish.
He may well be the oldest nominee, but I don't know if it was strictly necessary for his record company to point out that he didn't actually know Buddy Bolden. That's kinda cold....

Good point Allen. No need to have that sentence in at all IMO. The record is wonderful.

It's a magnificent album.
The Bolden mention is on his bio if you were to click on the banner above. Kind of a silly thing and a jab at the one here whose name makes threads grow and arguments ensue....
The words of praise from the musicians on the date inside the CD jacket terrific reading too!
Despite the members of the band being from the east coast almost exclusively, there is no doubt that it is a Gerald Wilson Big Band never the less.

I thought you might all want to know that NARAS (Grammy folks) will be incorporating more jazz into their programming and acknowledging jazz in a way they never have before thanks to Kurt Elling and Bruce Lundvall among others. This year Clark Terry and Gerald Wilson will be receiving lifetime achievements "Prism" awards from NARAS on Feb 4. I'm not sure it will be televised but it's a start....

Anyone who's been on the jazz scene for this many decades and is still smokin' deserves considerably more respect than accorded by Gerald Wilson's own record company, in my estimation. What were they possibly thinking?
Of course, reviews such as (an excerpt of which) follows don't exactly enhance Gerald's reputation, either.
But what did you expect from a man who has wrote for legendary greats like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzie Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, and Sarah Vaughn. Whewww! - Lisa Howard/jazzreview.com
Pathetic.

I just picked up "In My Time". What a SMOKIN' album! Where does a guy his age get off doing this kind of rocket fuel? Who does he think he is, anyway?
Well.......short answer: get this! You won't be disappointed.

There's a piece on NPR's Fresh Air today on Gerald. I don't know yet if it's an interview, or what. Worth a listen, either way.

I had the pleasure of spending 2 1/2 hours with Gerald on his birthday yesterday. It was an amazing, enlightening pleasure and it will be a Jazzcorner/Mack Ave podcast very soon.
Happy Birthday Gerald.

Thanks, BFrank! I was about to post the link when I saw yours. I'm listening to Fresh Air as I type, since I just missed the show about an hour ago.
I also extend the warmest birthday wishes to the legendary Gerald Wilson.

That's great, Lois. I look forward to the podcast!
I haven't had a chance to listen to the Fresh Air interview yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. I was lucky enough to see him on Kenny Burrell's 75th b-day at Yoshi's about a month ago. Great stuff.
Happy B-Day to Gerald! Don't ever stop.

Anyone know what Gerald's itinerary is these days? Does he have anything scheduled this summer?

Gerald Wilson is one of the all-time great arrangers and I love his very energetic conducting style.
He'll be at Monterey, having written a special suite. I don't know what else he is up to. With his energy, probably climbing mountains and skydiving.

You got THAT right, Scott. We saw him at Yoshi's last year for the Kenny Burrell b-day bash and he was "rockin' ".
Just hoping to see him again one of these days.

I think I mentioned this before but Gerald told me that Stan Kenton never acknowledged stealing that riff from "Yard Dog Mazurka."

He is a fine gentleman, one with a twinkle in his eye, and a love of life we should all enjoy. For him to love his lifes works as much as he has, and does, is a lucky thing in life, a blessing really, and then to be recognized by everyone, to receive the accolades he's received, and is receiving for his contributions to the music he loves so much, has to be icing on the cake.
We're lucky to have him.

I'm confused where is the review you're referring to Ron and Val? For the record (pun intended) Mack Ave treats Gerald with the utmost respect imo.

One of my most memorable jazz concert memories is of seeing the Gerald Wilson Big Band at the Pilgrimage Theater in LA, must have been 1976, 77, somewhere in there.
Gerald was conducting the band with his trumpet, not playing, but holding it in his hand and waving it around while he lead the band.
It was a great show, the band was on fire, as was Gerald, and as the show went on, the crowd was getting more and more excited, finally people started yelling for Gerald to play his horn..... it was great, he was humble, saying No No..... finally, it was probably the last song, and by then the band and the crowd were all worked up and Gerald DID take a solo..... and I'll tell you it was a stellar solo, and the place went crazy..... I'll always remember that.
Gerald is a hell of an arranger, writer, and was a pretty damned good player too....
