I know there's been a bit of discussion about this here and on other boards, but Herbie Nichols was born on January (not December) 3, 1919. It seems to be accepted fact lately that the December date is correct, but I'm positive it's January. In my old copy of Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz, 2nd ed., published in 1960, it's listed as January 3. My experience with the Encyclopedia is that the musicians themselves answer questions sent to them by the writer (Feather back then, and Ira Gitler these days, who also worked closely with Feather on the original editions). I was sent this form a few years ago, and answered the questions myself where my biography was concerned, and I'm pretty sure Herbie did the same thing back in the '50's. To further back the January date, I quote Herbie's own liner notes to "Herbie Nichols Trio", released by Blue Note (BLP 1519) in 1955 - 56:
"First of all, I would like to state that having been born (January 3, 1919) and raised in Manhattan......"
People claiming the December date usually cite one jazz history book or another. All it takes is the slip of a finger on the keyboard to turn 1 into 12, and believe me, I know plenty about finger slips on keyboards! It's a small problem compared to most of the problems in the world these days, but having studied Herbie's music and life for almost 20 years, and having written liner notes for the Blue Note box set, I know what I'm talking about. The man suffered so many indignities in life, I think the record should be set straight.

First of all, I’ve heavily edited this month’s list since posting it. I had a list of mostly younger musicians that I was adding to my list and I forgot I wasn’t finished yet. So the revised list has a lot more names on it.
Thank you, Frank, for weighing in on Herbie Nichols. I’ve moved him back and forth between months in the time I’ve been doing this list because of all the confusion. In fact, I most recently moved him to the January list about a week ago, but yesterday I checked the New Grove (the 2002 edition), which I tend to regard as definitive. They also do questionnaires, I’m pretty sure - someone can correct me if I’m mistaken, but I know they do on at least some entries. And the Feather/Gitler book, in its most recent edition at least, just has so many errors - especially transposition errors of the type you mention. But I see you’re using an older edition, which may be more accurate in this case, and the album liner notes are also interesting - although the date itself looks like it was inserted by the liner notes writer rather than coming from Nichols himself. But in light of the evidence and since you are a Nichols specialist, I will go ahead and move him to January, but if anyone else has additional information on this, please post. Also note that he would have been 85 this month. Thanks again, Frank.

Hi Allen - I think the birthdate in the liners may have been inserted, too - I suppose the reason I put more stock in them, and in the 2nd ed. of the Encyclopedia was the fact that Herbie was alive at the time, and probably would have provided the info to both sources. I actually left a message this morning with Ira Gitler, who may be able to help us out on this one. If I get a call back, I'll let you know.
