I'd love to hear one CD's worth, but six seems like overkill.

Sergio, why the hostility to standards?

Jay Oliver was a GREAT bass player, BTW.

I read an interview with Carl where he talked about this group. It must be stuff from the 80s or earlier since Oliver died about 1990.

There are some great pieces from this group on the Rudiger Carl CD Book . Six CDs are probably overkill, but I think this is being released by a gallery in limited edition. I'll probably pass.

Not hostility - more like your first sentence. I've herd Schlipp play composed material, and he's good, but I'd much rather hear him in a free improv setting. I'm sure the box will be real good, but I don't think I need all that. A single disc or double disc would be fine. I'd much rather get a 6 cd Ahmad Jamal or Wynton Kelly piano trio set.

Having heard AvS's take on Monk, I'd love to hear him play standards, especially with this band. I'm guessing that no one here has heard it. I emailed the gallery a couple of days ago about availability, but haven't had a response.

I'd actually love to hear this, not the least reason being Sven-Ake Johanssen. But I can't read German and wasn't able to find any pricing/ordering information on the gallery's website. My fear, however, is that it's obscenely priced as some kind of objet d'art, instead of just a hunky-dory box-set.

I believe your fear is correct. If you go to the Edition Artelier website and do a translation it says that the set is an edition of 30 copies.

FMP did release a single LP:

Looks like they still have a few copies at 25.50 eu. Too bad the dollar is worthless...

My time is a bit limited at present, but some clarification/information/corrections seemingly are more than due:

(1) Night And Day played from 1984 to 1992/93. The quartet occasionally had additional musicians guesting (Lol Coxhill, Shelley Hirsch, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Uschi Brüning).

(2) As far as I know, the group never played anything else than standards.

(2) The set is NOT limited to 30 copies. There is (or has been), however, a special silkscreen edition with just 30 copies around.

(3) There is at least one guy here who owns the set, but still has to find the time to listen.

(4) These are CDRs, not CDs, but the overall design and artwork does not rank after what one is used to with "normal" CDs.

(5) Copies may be obtained from Sven-Ake Johansson directly. I came to know about the set from Johansson's own site, not via the EFI pages.

(6) Pricing is not obscenely high. Johansson sells copies for Euro 75, but this may be a discounted price if one buys other stuff as well.

(7) The FMP did not release a full length LP by Night And Day. The recording mentioned here is a mini LP with 6 tracks and a total time of about 20 minutes. Recording quality leaves much to be desired.

I just got a response from the gallery about this. They have copies left, and quoted me 68 Euros plus another 15 for postage. Not a bad price really, but they want payment by bank transfer, which seems to be common in Europe, but my bank in Canada would charge me about 1/2 of that again to facilitate the transaction. Not sure what I'll do...

Maybe someone in Europe could get a copy or two?
