Local Jazz
I don't know if I'm allowed to do this.......and soory if I'm not....but considering the state of jazz in the last 30 or so years I think this is justified.
I was thinking that we could name jazz events that happen at little clubs or cafes around where ever we live. Weekly events so that people who are interested can go.
Please limit it to ONE that you particularly like so that we don't end up having a big add campaign on this thread.
So I'm gunna start;
There is a little Book store/cafe in a little town called Fairfax CA 94930, past San Rafael and San Anselmo. Every Sunday at 7:30 PM a quartet containing very very good musicians (with very impresive resumes) jam for two hours until 9:30.
Mario Guarneri - Trumpet
Calvin Keys - Guitar
Kash Killon - Bass
Peter Magadini - Drums
......something like that......put in the town and aprox. area code incase someone wants to look it up.
Thanks-
Nate

Hello, Hard Bop Cutter Nate, and welcome!
The "local jazz" thing is usually handled by creating a thread for the city or area you live in. So far I believe there are threads for New York, Paris, the Washington D.C. area, the Bay Area, and maybe one or two others. People in the area are likely to give those threads a look. I'd suggest you create a thread for , just because it might be more efficient.

yea........i'm aware of that, but I figure I would create a more simple way and a way with less extra curricular chat and create kind of a yellow pages type of thing.

Hi Tom - a devoted thread is fine for the larger centes like New York or Paris where there is a lot of jazz activity which tends to keep the thread active at the top of the thread list but I think it would be better to group events in smaller regional centres on the one thread. If the thread stays prominent on the list there will be a much greater chance of say in this instance a jazz fan or musician living in travelling distance of Fairfax actually coming across the information - if not now, in a few weeks or months time. It should also encourage more people to post about jazz events taking place in their own regional communities - perhaps even people who don't often post but do have valuble information of this nature to contribute to the forum. It could even evolve into a bit of a resource for jazz bands looking to put tours together in making them aware of the existence of venues that are off the beaten track to some extent.
Also if the venue has a web site it would be good to include that with any posting.

Seems to me that's what the Calendar feature is for.

Except for the fact that hardly anyone puts any information about any live events on the calendar and even on the odd occassion they do they tend to be things taking place in major centres.

Yeah that's the other thing about the calendar - not only does hardly anybody put any info on it but it's doubtful that very many people ever bother to look at it - unlike the threads. One or two people starting to post some info about a few local jazz events is not going to change that situation.

But Fairfax is solidly within the Bay Area region thread -- it's about 20 minutes from San Francisco and a half hour from Oakland. A lot closer than the stuff I post from the North Bay and Mike posts from San Jose.
HBC: are you the same drummer from Sir Francis Drake HS that posted here before? If not, are you hip to BedRock Records? Close to you, and better quality used jazz than the bigger Village Music in Mill Valley.

Hi Steve - wasn't aware that Fairfax is so close to the Bay area - as such this particular bit of info does really belong in the "San Francisco Bay Area Jazz Scene" thread but I still think a thread dedicated to drawing attention to small local regional jazz events would be of some value.

It funny that you bring up the calendar. I've been think about posting about it for the last day or so. I wish folks would use it more. It's a handy feature and should be utilized far more than just for birthdays.

Local Jazz?
In my Little Land O'Enchantment...ZZAH.
A three piece Jazz band [keyboard, guitar, drums] which plays a mix of Straight Ahead to Fusion to Smooth...but pretty damn good, IMO.
Hey! It's ALL we got...OK?

Here in the UK we have a lot of small local jazz gigs dotted around the country taking place once a week in pubs etc. featuring good local musicians - often trios, similiar to the gigs that HBC and Goody have mentioned. Basic economics restrict these venues from bringing in touring bands from other regions but what a number of them do to spice up their program is budget to bring in a guest soloist - say once a month - to perform with the local trio. Usually (but not exclusively) this will be a horn player. In fact one particular local band of musicians in Wales actuallly arrange a two week tour for themselves and the soloist at a series of small venues in that area of Wales. This is probably the only time that some of these venues actually ever stage a music event. Does anything like this take place in the States? Perhaps it's easier over here given the shorter distances musicians would need to travel. In any case its a good system which brings many established name players into small regional communities and supports the local musicians by generating publicity for their jazz event.
