Jazz Journalists Association "Jazz Matters," NYC 4/16

The four-part spring "Jazz Matters" panel discussions, sponsored by the Jazz Journalists Association continues at the New School, 55 West 13th St. on Wednesday, April 16th from 6-8PM with "The Jazz and Contemporary Classical Overlap: How the Musics Intersect for Musicians, Journalists, and Listeners." The Music Critics Association of North America joins the JJA for this presentation about junctures of the genres, featuring distinguished representatives from the press and recording industry. The "hows" and "wheres" of the intersections between jazz, improvisation and contemporary composition pose issues, opportunities and challenges for the entire music community, touching on music education programs, funding initiatives, musicians' practices, journalists' expertise and audiences' preferences.

Guest panelists include Steve Smith, classical editor for Time Out, NY: Thomas Bellino, jazz fellowship director at Chamber Music America; D.D. Jackson, pianist, composer and columnist for Down Beat; MCANA members Anne Midgette, classical music critic for The New York Times, and Ken Smith, freelance music writer. The panel is co-moderated by Frank J. Oteri, Music Critics Association of North America, and American Music Center's webmagazine "New Music Box", and Howard Mandel, JJA president.

"Jazz Matters" is held at the New School's Jazz and Contemporary Music program, 5th floor performance space, located at 55 West 13 Street (between 5th & 6th Aves.) Admission is free. For further details, please contact Howard Mandel at Hman@jazzhouse.org or visit the JJA's website at www.jazzhouse.org.
