It kind of does depend on your perspective. If you have no other music by those musicians (and you definitely need some!) then these discs seem like good collections, a fine starting point. You will never get "THE DEFINITIVE" Monk or Miles or any master in one disc... so hopefully you weren't looking for that.
If you're just getting into the music, discs like these can be great, because you will play them over and over again and wear them out, and then later look back on them lovingly (seriously!) as a great time of new things in your life that forever changed it. That is no exaggeration. Of course the only problem with that is that you will eventually end up buying all the individual albums they come from, and could ostensibly put that money towards starting to buy them now.
But, to be honest, that would ruin some of the fun of branching out from those first collections. I still have fond feelings for the initial cheapo "Best of" Charlie Parker 2 disc set I bought.
