Art Pepper in the LRB

Incidentally I seem to have missed the Dec. 18 London Review of Books which features an article by Terry Castle on Art Pepper, called "My Heroin Christmas". Has anyone seen this? Is it worth tracking down?

There's also a brief response to it in the current (8 Jan) issue by Dewi Jones.

Just looking at the title, I doubt there'd be much in the way of cogent musical analysis in that piece, but I'd still like to see it.

I thought it was reasonably interesting, if slightly too long, but at times worth a chuckle.

You will learn little if anything about Pepper or his music that you don't know already, but is nonetheless interesting to see how someone reacts to an artist like Pepper.

As my copy is about to be binned, let me know if you want it.

In fact, I became aware of the Art Pepper article in the LRB, when I was trying to make all of you aware of an Uli posting.

Common enough expression among most of the email groups I know, but I guess it's not universal.

Just got an emailed copy of the article from a subscriber--jeez, it's a LOOOOOONG one. Been reading (& skimming occasionally) for a while now & am still only 2/3rds done! Well, whatever my qualms about Castle's over-the-top crush on Pepper & on Straight Life, it can't be a bad thing of LRB readers are introduced to Meets the Rhythm Section or his other greatest albums. Now if the LRB would get around to the darn Tom Raworth article they promised ages ago........
