I've joined the ranks of scum-sucking
Recently me and mrs. jmj succombed to the siren song of the SUV. Well, actually, we succombed to the siren song of the accellerated income tax depreciation for motor vehicles over 6000 lbs GVW. In short, we bought a VW Touareg. It's a great vehicle, at least from a comfort and performance point of view, but it gets terrible gas mileage (even though we opted for the 6 cylinder instead of the 8).
Additionally, like all VWs, it has electrical gremlins. So far we have about 1500 miles on the odometer and we've already had the integrated stereo/CD player head unit replaced due to a malfunctioning CD player. Also, the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) system is malfunctioning, and in all likelihood the TPM module will be replaced. The replacement CD player still doesn't work quite correctly, so perhaps that'll be swapped out again as well. Having owned a 97 Passat for several years, I was well aware of the gremlin issues, and we bought an extended bumper to bumper warranty to cover the inevitable.
Aside from these malfunctions, we like driving the car. I've had plenty of opportunity to utilize the all wheel drive system, given the snow and ice that is currently covering the driving and parking surfaces in southeastern Mass. Currently, we fight over who gets to drive it on any given day. I often resort to weasely tactics in an attempt to get my way.

According to the CD-ROM that came with it (featuring Dakar Rally driver Jutta Kleinschmidt) , it's "Too-ah-reg". We pronounce it more like "Tore-egg". My wife has dubbed it "Jutta".
The estimated mileage is something like 17/20 city/highway, but I'm not sure we're getting much more than 17 all around. Makes the Passat look like a Prius in comparison.

A great post, but I have to throw in a big but. When I first was reading it I wondered if you got "virulent" from me (I love to combine it with other adjectives to create great insults) . But I disclaim authorship with respect to the rest of the phrase, in case anyone thinks it's a direct quote.
