Sloane At The Vanguard

I hope to see many of you at The Village Vanguard in New York City April 22-27. The quartet of stellar musicians features Norman Simmons, piano; Paul West, bass; Paul Bollenback, guitar; Grady Tate, drums.

I am looking forward to this gig ... Carol Sloane

Best of luck. "When I Look in Your Eyes" is one of my favorite vocal albums.

Rochester Gig

Dear David ... My yes! I remember that gig very well because it occured during the time I was subbing for Annie Ross, and on that particular date, Dave Lambert wasn't there either. Jon Hendricks and I handled the book together with the Ike Isaacs Trio. It was hard work as I recall, much like the first time I subbed for Annie in Philadelphia. At that time, I had only been practicing to the LH&R Recordings at home, but then the call came to sub for Annie, and I went on that night without any rehearsal with Jon and Dave. First song was "Cottontail" at a furious tempo, but after that bath of fire, nothing else seemed so difficult!

How interesting that you remember the Rochester date so long ago. That makes two of us.

Best to you, Carol

Seems like I heard you were at the Frog and Nightgown up in Raleigh a few years back; heard some mighty fine chat 'bout you.

Good luck! Grady Tate, WOW!

Vanguard w/Grady Tate

Yes, I lived in Raleigh, NC in the late 1960's, and some of the best times were spent singing at The Frog & Nightgown. The place is a legend in that part of the country, and the owner (an English musician/biochemist) was able to book all of these famous jazz names and more: George Shearing, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, The MJQ, Teddy Wilson, Buddy Rich, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Charlie Byrd ... and those are just the ones I remember seeing there. Many more played the room. And it had a good run for about ten years. I don't think there's any jazz club in Raleigh that presents or cares about that kind of jazz any more. But then so many of those legendary musicians are no longer with us. It was certainly fun while it lasted. -CS
