The Wire

http://www.thewire.co.uk/

Placeholder for any discussion about the UK modern/experimental music magazine The Wire.

I maintain the Unofficial Wire Audio Companion - an issue-based site pointing to audio tracks of music reviewed or featured in The Wire. Volunteers are always needed to help expand its usefulness - see how at the the site.

Let's hear it for our own Brian Olewnick and Steve Smith, who both appear in the Apr 2003 ish with nice pieces on John Tilbury and the Amplify: Tonic fest, respectively.

I like it a lot. I'll be resubbing next month. It's an expensive sub but it's one of the two best music mags IMHO (with STN), and the expense seems less so with the CDs. I don't always like everything, but there are always some real keepers. Makes up for the extra cost of the subs, easily, and keeps me abreast of at least some of the different musics I probably wouldn't otherwise hear.

How is the 3 CD set? I haven't sprung for it yet. Got the 2 disc one with the magazine and still haven't gotten into too much on it.

I've updated the Unofficial Wire Audio Companion with a number of links, mostly provided from submitters.

I'll also note, as does the July issue in the Go To: section, p87, that a similar site, typically annotated, exists in Swen Emmerling's blog - so check both sites for Wire-related music links.

I've added a number of links from the main review section for the last three issues (Jun-Aug) in the Audio Companion (linked to above).

August has a rather pointless pan of the new Glenn Phillips albums by Ben Watson, who's the last person in the world you'd expect to be even marginally sympathetic to Phillips' brand of melodic instrumentals and histrionic guitar solos. I love Phillips' music, myself - I can't get enough of the guy's guitar sound, but it's not something I'd recommend to Wire readers, and can't figure why it's even reviewed, let alone by Watson.

That's pretty enlightening. Can't wait to check out Troubleman Unlimited's new CD on the Black Dice label.

my December issue came a few days ago, the last two have come very promptly, before that they were taking close to a month most of the time. the Rewind is always in the January issue, although people turn their lists in during November.
